"The last book of the Beka Cooper trilogy did not disappoint! It was suspenseful with just the right amount of humor and a little extra romance. Definitely read the first two books before starting this one. Tamora Pierce does an excellent job of pulling you into the story and making the characters people you want to get to know better. I was disappointed that this was the last Beka Cooper story as I could happily keep reading about her adventures. Here's hoping that Pierce will start a new series in Tortall for us to enjoy!"

Starred Review, Kirkus Reviews, October 1, 2011:"Pierce has long been lauded for her kickass heroines, and in Beka she has created her most compelling, complicated character...[T]his novel provides both crackerjack storytelling and an endearingly complex protagonist."
Booklist, December 1, 2011:
This concluding title in the Beka Cooper series is the best yet, a tasty blend of detective work, romance, magic, and treachery."
" As an avid reader of all of Pierce's books, Mastiff is yet another favorite and dives deep into the story of Beka's latest and greatest adventure "
— SkysongKitten, 9/22/2022" great story. I was surprised and disturbed by the ending. I felt it was out of character, and there was not enough basis for this change of heart. I love the adventures they had, the new love interest, and all the rest. I can't get enough of Tamora Pierce. Waiting for her next book. "
— Elaine, 2/20/2014" Solid ending to a entertaining series. It was probably my favorite in the series. "
— Angel, 2/20/2014" This is the last of the Beka Cooper books were she rides across the country looking for a stolen prince. It is a fun read that shows other parts of the country and how old time cops worked. It is only a good read though if you have read the rest of the book in the series "
— Elizabeth, 2/11/2014" I didn't love it as an end to Beka Cooper's story, but because I'm practically hard-wired to love anything Tamora Pierce writes, I still enjoyed the ride. "
— Anastasia, 1/30/2014" I'm sad to see this series end. I liked the main character Beka Cooper and it was a fun fantasy. Pierce focuses on female lead characters, and I always enjoy that. I'm looking forward to the next series from her. Hopefully she stays in Tortall, I've grown fond of that place. "
— Shelly, 1/29/2014" Ahhhh, Mistress Pierce, you're a lady after my own heart with this book! The whole series was amazing, and this last book was outstanding. Certainly I've never seen finer work in a first-person, journal-style book, and I'm ever more in love with your ability to tell such grand tales! :D <3 "
— Jessi, 1/26/2014" Enjoyable last book of Beka Cooper series of Tortall Legends. Will overlook its peculiar epilogue that kind of stop midair. "
— Suzanne, 1/9/2014" A great ending to a great trilogy!! Keep it up Tamora Pierce!! "
— Clara, 1/2/2014" I really enjoyed reading the last installment of Pierces's latest series it brought back the fun and enjoyment I had reading her books as a teen :) Her narrative only gets stronger and better and is a pleasure to read. "
— Ravenous, 11/28/2013" Not NEARLY as good as the others. "
— Katy, 11/23/2013" now I feel like rereading the previous books "
— Nathalie, 11/6/2013" Disappointed with this one. :( I'm too upset to write a review. "
— Gabbie, 5/18/2013" An intense story of a kidnapping and the subsequent hunt for the victim and the criminals. Beka is as good as ever, and apart from getting a bit impatient with the middle part (same way SHE got frustrated herself with how the hunt went) it was rather difficult to put down. "
— Scolaro, 2/11/2013" This book was amazing! I couldn't put id down. Beka is the type of woman all girls aspire to be like, brave strong and yet human. Tamora Pierce is a master of her craft and has outdone herself with this book! "
— Courtney, 12/30/2012" Much better than the last one. Good action, a few twists and turns, mostly predictable yet enjoyable.A satisfying end to the series. "
— Morth, 9/23/2012" i didnt actually finish reading it because the library wont let me renew it any longer than i have and i cant possibly finish half of it in one day. "
— Naj, 8/31/2012" This was a great ending book for the trilogy. The plot was intense and full of adventure. It had some hard-hitting emotional points and twists. And as usual, Pierce's romance is subtle and more about the emotion than the physical. Loved this book! "
— Christine, 7/25/2012" Awesome book. I love everything by Tamora Pierce, but this one was really great. I'm sad that it seems to be the last about this heroine. "
— Lindsay, 4/18/2012" A fine conclusion to the trilogy. I will definitely miss the characters. I would highly recommend this read to teens and adults. Fast paced, political intrigue, great characters, and stylized writing. I am now interested in reading Pierce's other series. "
— Elana, 12/11/2011" Best of the series in my mind. I thoroughly enjoyed this one. It did break my heart at times, but in the best ways. "
— Arachne8x, 11/5/2011" 3rd in the Beka Cooper series. Excellent book. Very difficult to put down after the action got going. I'm rather disappointed that this appears to be the last Beka Cooper book, but it's still a fantastic series. "
— Teresa, 11/2/2011" This is a beautiful ending to the Terrier trilogy. I absolutely love these characters, and I totally cried, like, twice while reading this. So good! "
