"I had a bit of trouble getting into this book. I read a lot, but this book taught me that there are still a lot of words that I just don't know yet! I'm not sure how many of them were real, and how many were made up, but I felt that, especially in the beginning, I spent a lot of time just trying to sound out words and figure out what they meant. Eventually, though, the story itself took over and I found myself in the rare position of empathizing with a character I've loathed since childhood, Oz's Wicked Witch of the West. Reading this book reminded me that there are always two sides to a story, and even though you think you know all you need to know about a person based on how they look or how they behave, the truth is they have had an entire life that you probably are not privy to, so don't judge. I was really sad to see her go."

“An amazing novel.”
— John Updike" I liked this story overall. It was an interesting take on the classic Wizard Of Oz story. I was surprised that it actually lead up to Dorothy's arrival in Oz. I was also surprised at how "adult" the book was. I'm not sure what I was expecting, but a sex-scene with the Wicked Witch of the West was a surprise. It wasn't perfect, but it was a lot of fun. "
— Aeon815, 9/18/2017" This really jumped around and the way they would randomly skip ahead to a different time with no hint that they did was really confusing. I won't be reading this again. "
— Kelly, 2/15/2014" fascinating read. can see why they made this into a musical "
— Rebecca, 2/3/2014" This was not at all what I expected. This may be the first time I have ever thought that it would be better to skip the book and catch the play! "
— Megan, 2/3/2014" Liked it, but it dragged before the end and kinda rushed to wrap it up... I am keen to read the rest of the series though, am buying them through the Book Depos! "
— Rosalie, 1/24/2014" as a fifth grader I enjoyed this book, but was lost in the preachy politics. I have tried to read it again and found the same thing to be true. Additionally, on the second read through the imagery felt dry and off putting. THis may have been purposeful, but did not leave me wanting more. "
— Tracy, 1/18/2014" So...if you're interested in this book, might I refer you to the very good play that was based on this book. It is a much better story and much cleaner. There was enough that was interesting in the book that I finished the book, but I won't continue with the series. "
— Nic, 1/14/2014" Nella memoria popolare, il male precede sempre il bene. "
— Federica, 1/9/2014" Very interesting, It surely put a different spin on a beloved book and characters that I've known all my life. "
— Sharon, 1/6/2014" I read this book and I loved it. A lot. "
— EmilyAnn, 1/6/2014" While the beginning of this book kept me engaged (it's a great premise), it quickly entered the Land of So What. Lots of stuff happening, but not necessarily going anywhere, as is evidenced by the ending that fizzled. "
— melissaqrosen, 12/27/2013" With so much hype, I guess I was expecting more. I found it very dry, and dry reading doesn't keep my attention well. It took me forever to finish this book. "
— Michelle, 12/24/2013" It's been a while since I first read this, and now that it's the second time reading it, I understand so much more of the content and just how intense this book really is. Utterly fantastic. Not only did Maguire create a larger world of Oz, he polished it. "
— Amy, 12/14/2013" Being my favorite novel, Wicked is, for me, the best reimagination of Oz. Take a peek and you'll be indulged for sure. "
— J., 12/9/2013" didn't get through the whole book "
— Cindy, 12/6/2013" That is definitely not The Wizard of Oz of your childhood. Still trying to make sense of a lot of it. "
— Kathy, 12/2/2013" Darker, sexual take on the Wizard of Oz story. A bit odd, but still kinda enjoyable. Probably wouldn't read it again. "
— Michael, 7/19/2013" What a creative story. "
— Kathleen, 6/3/2013" I do not usually say this, but the play was better than the book due to its character development and closer adherence to the original Oz series. "
— Mallory, 5/7/2013" I love the story. The witch is the product of a fundamentalist preacher. outstanding "
— Jim, 11/12/2012" Loved this book. Took me a couple times just to get into it only because I think I started it at too young of an age, but once I did I was hooked. Still haven't read the second, but I am looking forward to it! "
— Sarah, 9/28/2012" It was confusing at times, but on e you powered through those parts it was a good book. "

— Kirstin, 5/23/2012" Ugh...I just could not get into this book. I didn't care about any of the characters and from what I read, nothing ever happened. "
— cassie, 4/13/2012" a new twist on the classic OZ books. Just what makes a person wicked? "
— Emily, 4/11/2012" This is one of my favorite books! "
— Aiko, 4/10/2012" A real page turner! creative and magical...gave me a different perspective of the wicked witch other than the one from the classic movie "the wizard of oz" and extended story of her life and background...very entertaining read ! "
— Moira, 4/2/2012" I had trouble getting into the story, but once I focused on the experience and not understanding I was pulled in and enjoyed the way it all came together. I love new perspectives and seeing things from another angle. "
— Emily, 3/11/2012" Complex. Sorta like reading a Tom Clancy novel..without the battleships. It took a while to get through, but I'm glad I did. It was unlike the orginial story its based on by Frankl L. Baum --Wizard of Oz -- and also not quite like its adaption on Broadway..WICKED. "
— Ginger, 9/10/2011" This was not exactly what I expected when I read this. It was VERY graphic. But it told another side of the story and was very interesting to read. I loved it! "
— Kristin, 6/2/2011" Very interesting but lengthy and a bit complicated "
— Mollie, 5/31/2011" I had such high hopes for this book, but was sorely disappointed. It took me 2 years to read this book. I read this before seeing the show, so I wasn't tainted. I def recommend the show, forget the book. "
— Tina, 5/31/2011" This was a great book. It's funny, sad, and worthwhile. The reader gets completely caught up in the story. "
— Katherine, 5/31/2011" I didn't really like it when I read it in college, but I decided to give it another chance and listened to the audiobook. I loved it this time around. Maybe the difference was in the form (book vs. audio), or maybe my interests have change in the last 10 yrs. "
— Jessica, 5/30/2011" Wild story. I had a hard time following the "politics", then saw the musical. I was glad I had read the book before I saw it. Entertaining and imaginative. "
— Nancy, 5/30/2011" Much much darker than the stage musical. "
— Linoaktown, 5/30/2011" I'm sorry but no. This book wasn't anything special. In fact it was boring and un-special. No offense to anyone but I didn't even finish this book it was just to boring. "

— Charlene, 5/28/2011" Though confusing at times, many holes in the plot and takes a longer to read, I really did enjoy this book. It has a beautiful story told of an outcasts life. "
— Jessica, 5/28/2011" This is an interesting story. My rating is not due to a lack in the story's craft, it just didn't really grab me. It was a solid read, and I'd still recommend it. "
— Mike, 5/28/2011" So disappointing. Had high hopes for this book and I think it was one of the first books I never finished. I just couldn't get into it. However, the broadway play wad fantastic. "
— Christy, 5/27/2011" It was hard to get into at the beginning, but once I understood the characters, I really enjoyed it. "
