Publisher Description

This carol is based on a 16th century English melody called "Greensleeves." The lyrics to "What Child is This?" were first published in 1871, and are attributed to William Chatterton Dix. The carol is sung from the perspective of the shepherds who witnessed the birth of Jesus Christ. In the opening stanza, the speaker asks questions about the child who has been born, and marvels at the humble setting in which he finds himself. This recording offers reading of the English language lyrics followed by magical Harp music based on original Christmas Carol melody.
