In Undead and Unwed, Betsy Taylor is 30 years old and has spent time as both a fashion model and a secretary, only to find herself unemployed and a recent casualty of a car accident. The main problem is that, although she died in the crash, she doesn't stay dead.
She finally wakes up in her own coffin wearing an outfit she would decidedly not have selected for herself, especially those horribly cheap shoes.
This humorous chick-lit novel gives a unique stance on the vampire theme. Betsy joins forces with another vampire, the beautiful, although somewhat perverted vampire, Eric Sinclair.
Betsy's own family has mixed feelings about her return from the clutches of death. Her mother loves having her daughter back. Her father's wife prefers having Betsy's designer shoe collection than her daughter-in-law back in the flesh.
Betsy tries to solve her own problems, but is kidnapped by the centuries-old vampire Nostro, who diverts her plans. Betsy refuses to conform to traditional vampire roles. She is a strange mix of modern trendsetter, dead, unwed female who can't stay dead, no matter how much she tries, and worrier who can't get away from the life she has led up to this point.
When she finds out that her friends believe she is the savior figure who has been prophesied as being the vampire Queen who is supposed to overthrow the world's most power-hungry vampire, things really start to heat up.
MaryJanice Davidson is married with children and lives in St. Paul, Minnesota. She is a former model and claims to have participated in various medical tests. "This is my favorite book! It is a quick, easy but hillarious read. The only problem I had was the addiction I formed to this series. I own the whole series and have read almost all the books atleast 3 times! I would recommend this book if you are looking for something funny and light."
— Elizabeth (5 out of 5 stars)
MaryJanice Davidson's cult hit Undead and Unwed is a delightful mixture of Sex and the City and Buffy the Vampire Slayer. Waking up in a tacky coffin, and wearing off-brand shoes, Betsy Taylor can't believe the horrible turn her life has taken-then she discovers she's a vampire. Soon, Betsy becomes a participant in a power struggle between the forces of darkness. With only her friend Jessica and the hunky vampire Sinclair to help her, this new "Queen of Vampires" will have a tough time getting her afterlife straight. " A mix up of Stephanie Plum and Sookie Stackhouse. This was a quick, funny read. I'll be back for more. "
— Tracie, 2/16/2014" Silly if you enjoy Chick Lit that is devoid of deeper meaning. I read it in 2 days maybe and felt dumber for reading it. I will say I only read it because someone gave me it, and recommended it highly. So despite my loathing the book you may love it. "
— Jennifer, 2/12/2014" This is light, fun, fluff-and that's not at all a bad thing! Sometimes you need to read something fun and let your brain have a rest. I'm up to book 7 in this series and while all are fun I can tell that Davidson spent quite a bit of time and effort developing this first book. "
— Jen, 2/8/2014" Love this light-hearted vamp series with bite. Er, sorry couldn't resist! Betsy is the coolest, although gawkiest, vampire around! Def recommend! "
— Suzanne, 1/30/2014" Listened to the audiobook while driving to FL. Super annoying, and ditsy. The main character was just childish and did I say ditsy... "
— Ava, 1/27/2014" I love that she lives in the Twin Cities and has all her adventures where I have actually been! Fun story with a humorous side. "
— Cheryl, 1/25/2014" Bland story line with a good wit and humor mixed in. "
— Malina, 1/16/2014" Book on CD - Betsy awakens as a vampire who breaks all the rules. Love how into shoes she is! Quick enjoyable read. "
— Jennifer, 1/12/2014" I love the Queen Betsy vampire series. Light, yet engaging enough to keep your attention. Betsy is funny and flawed in a way that makes her someone on can relate with to the reader. "
— Grace, 1/7/2014" I really enjoyed this read... Funny corky, simply irresistible! "
— Sandra, 12/15/2013" HILARIOUS! LOL! SEXY! LOL! She's just an ordinary vampire girl trying to live an ordinary (undead) life (and all the sex is just accidental ... very very erotic ... so funny). And then we have the shoes. ... "
— BridgetT, 12/3/2013" Hilarious and fun... shopaholic meets Sookie stackhouse, perfect mindless reading!!! "
— Stefani, 11/12/2013" Loved the sense of humor in this series. "
— Debbie, 7/14/2013" The book that introduced me to paranormal fiction. It's been a while since I read it, but from what I remember, it was funny, witty, and a treat. If you like a little humor along with your vampires, hellspawn, and shoe-fanatics, this is definitely worth a look. "
— Sarah-jane, 6/2/2013" reading this is akin to listening to a goth valley girl! arg. :P "

— Maria, 10/22/2012" Seems like every book lately has vampires in it, and they are all so similar. I enjoyed this book, because it was different from the other vampire books. It wasn't all dark and mysterious, like most of the vampire books that I've read. This one made me laugh!!!! "
— Amber, 4/24/2012" Queen Betsy is fun, has a best friend with a heart of gold, and is willing to clean up the city like a vampire superhero. "
— Marcey, 4/14/2012" Loved it! The first chapter had me laughing so hard, it brought tears to my eyes. "
— Bekah, 8/25/2011" I found this book years ago and thought it was hilarious. It was my first stint into "chic-lit" and it got me hooked! Well worth the read. "
— Emily, 6/25/2011" Didn´t like it at all. <br/>It was boring, with several sex-scenes that didn´t really make sence to me. And the Shoe-Obsession of this woman became really annoying! "
— Stefanie, 5/30/2011" This is far the funniest book of this series. Especially the beginning and when she found out she was a vampire. So entertaining. "

— Nicole, 5/11/2011" boring. read it before and it took me a while to realize this...finished it first time but not second. "
— Carla, 5/9/2011" The author believes kidnapping and rape to be romantic and sexy methods of gaining a spouse. Any reasonable person will forgo this author so they don't throw up from the message that abuse and sexual assault are ways to show you care. "
