When Alice's wealthy—and much coveted—teenage crush, Joe, asks her to marry him, she is prepared to trade in her dream of a cottage filled with children, animals and home-cooked meals for what he has in mind for her: stilettos, blond highlights, and a diet. She tells herself that she's happy to sacrifice for love, especially when every woman in London would like to be in her shoes. But when her cheating Prince Charming is forced to relocate to New York as a result of an indiscretion with a female colleague, Alice feels her life spinning out of control. But soon enough, she finds herself renovating a country house in Connecticut—and in the process rediscovering herself. Friends, fresh air, and her best friend's boyfriend offer her a glimpse of a life—and love—she always wanted. But can she break Joe's spell? "A sparkling morality tale that points the finger at bad boys and low-rent romance."—The Independent, U.K.

"This book was fabulous. It was a great story of what happens when Prince Charming turns out to be a toad. Alice thought that Joe Chambers was the perfect man, but he has a wandering eye. Even though he molds her into his ideal woman, he can't help but test out greener pastures. Alice loves her husband, and she doesn't want to see his true colors. Eventually, Joe's wandering indiscretions forces him to leave his prominent position in the UK. Alice discovers her ideal life in the US, but Joe can't stop cheating. So what happens when Alice finally faces the truth?"

" I have to say, I found this disappointingly bland. I've read several Jane Green books, and I always read them with the vague feeling that I've read them before and have just forgotten the specifics. I think this may be my last attempt at a Jame Green book, which is frustrating as I loved Jemima J and Mr Maybe! Its just too annoying to read a book and find the storyline so derivative that you have a constant sneaking suspicion that you've read it before. I was also frustrated as *possible spoiler* the supposed big climax of the book is a bit of a damp squib. It builds for so many pages, then the denouement is dealt with almost as an afterthought and disposed of in about three pages. Disappointing and derivative. "
— Lynsay, 2/19/2014" It's Jane Green, if you liked her other books, you'll like this one.. "
— Cambria, 2/18/2014" This was a new author for me. The story is very modern and lite to read. I cheered when Alice decided to do her own thing. I was glad that the author did not tie-up all the plots into a happy ever after ending. I will seek out this author again in the future. "
— Brenda, 2/10/2014" It really makes you think about who you are and what you would be willing to put up with for love. "
— Karen, 2/5/2014" I read a ton of mixed reviews on this book, so I was a little leary about it, but I must say I really enjoyed. I love how the main character was able to find the happiness she deserved and be herself! "
— Teryl, 2/4/2014" when you don't want to think, read some of Jane Green she's good "
— Molly, 1/19/2014" very slow starting.... not planning on finishing it.... "
— Sandra, 1/16/2014" To Have and To Hold: A Novel by Jane Green (2005) "
— Julie, 1/9/2014" MY favorite Jane Green book, although no one else thinks so. "
— Vicky, 12/30/2013" Jane Green is a great read...predictable (most of the time) but very entertaining in delivery. "
— Shanna, 12/12/2013" Quick, easy, entertaining read. Jane Green never disappoints. "
— Lauren, 12/5/2013" Loved this book! Couldn't put it down! "
— Lorri, 12/4/2013" Kind of slow in places...not her best work. "
— Sandy, 10/25/2013" Cute. I liked this better than Jemima J. "
— Jenn, 5/25/2013" I know I read this, but can't remember much about it - so it can't have been great, but I also musn't have hated it. So it gets 2 stars! "
— Kirsty, 1/25/2013" Not one of Jane's best books, but a nice read anyways. "
— Jule, 12/8/2012" Great story and writing but way too much use of the "F" word. "
— Tracie, 11/19/2012" I enjoy Jane Green's novels because they are quick, fun reads. This book, however, is a little depressing as you are invited into a bad marriage. "
— Wendy, 8/2/2012" Another sub-par Green novel. She has done better than this one "
— Lex, 5/3/2012" kalo blm ngerasa dewasa n berumur cukup, dilarang keras baca buku ini..whahah..bisa bikin gangguan jiwa.. "
— Ellsa, 2/8/2012" I liked the plot twists in this book-- it didn't follow the traditional formula, and I appreciated that. "
Being yourself memang hal yang paling penting "
— Nuria, 5/11/2011" Meh. Just wasn't that great, really. The characters weren't all that believable, and the ending was lacklustre. I really just hoped for something better, I guess. It wasn't a complete waste of time, but I wouldn't recommend it to anyone else. "
— Taysha, 5/7/2011" Chick lit pure and simple. "
— Caroline, 2/28/2011" the first half of the book was quick to read, but started making me feel kind of depressed for Alice--I loved the second half though because it made me want to move out the the country and fix up my own cottage! "
— Amy, 2/18/2011" It was an entertaining enough read, but the ending was so cheesy. "
— Veronica, 2/11/2011" Very girly, very chick-lit to the highest degree. But I liked it, and think that I read it before. "
— Marie, 1/27/2011" Good chick lit. I liked it because we have all been in one of those "how did I get here" situations, especially with men. The guy was such a jerk in this book as well, she really did deserve better, but when your "dream guy" comes along, I can see how she gets swept up in it. "
— Beth, 12/9/2010" I liked the ending! I am not a big fan of books on infidelity. "
— Aubrey, 12/7/2010" Decent, easy read - pretty funny at times, but the plot was almost too predictable. The main character in the story seemed too intelligent to also be so naive. "
— Joy, 12/3/2010" It was a really good read, the kind of book you can pick up and read in a couple of days. Even though I had a good idea of what was going to happen, I liked the journey to get there! "
— Steph, 11/8/2010" Standard chick lit. I'd say skip it. "
— Jana, 10/19/2010" My favorite Jane Green book yet! "
