"The book to go for if you're looking for an insight on a criminal mind. His thoughts, as well as those of his victims are laid bare. I enjoyed this one. "

— Punit (4 out of 5 stars)

Quotes

  • “A fabulous twenty-first-century tale...Coelho’s tone is intelligent and ironic, and his style is sharp and biting.”

    — Milwaukee Journal Sentinel
  • “This tour de force demonstrates forcefully why Brazilian novelist Paulo Coelho is reputed to be the bestselling author in the world...Mixing social satire and sheer panic, this fast-paced thriller drives to its breathtaking conclusion, leaving us amazed that the author of The Alchemist would also be capable of this.”

    — Barnes and Noble editorial review
  • “Audie Award nominee Paul Boehmer’s rich renderings of the wonderfully complex secondary characters are the highlight of Coelho’s latest work, which is quite a departure from his trademark mystical parables.”

    — Library Journal (audio review)

" This is a book I will probably have to read again... in a year or two. It is dark but I put it down quite often: the main character, Igor, too much explanation spent on his obsessive love turning into justifiable evil but also I was not interested in the other characters. There's a lot of shifting in the narrative which did not help neither. Igor could have been interesting in all his quiet madness and still I did not care for him or any of the 5 other characters. "

" I feel that the author was looking for a vehicle to rant about certain issues and wrapped them around an interesting character study of a mad man. I wanted more of the story and less rants about why airlines don't let you turn on your cell phones. Although interesting their own, they didn't often advance the plot and I found them distracting. I had been wanting to read the Alchemist, but picked this up first, and now I don't know if I will bother to read it. "

" Still the same recurring themes: love, spirituality, religion and dreams. For once, Paulo Coelho explored the "negative" side of dreams...How though dreams are beautiful, sometimes they cost you more than you bargained for. His writing style is quite different compared to the other book. At the beginning I thought that I was reading a thriller though he did lay emphasis that this book is not a thriller from the very start. Still, The Winner Stands Alone, was as engaging as his other books. It made me realise a couple things about myself. Yet, the ending did not meet my expectations... "
