Living in New Jersey, the state that boasts the most malls per capita, Kat’s favorite recreational activity is a no-brainer: shopping. But when she discovers that her husband, Griff, has been hiding a secret bank account, her joyful consumerism suddenly loses its appeal. Are their fights about money more serious than she understood? Is he, as her friends suggest, preparing for a divorce? Just in case, Kat decides it’s time to start saving.

Drastic times call for drastic measures: Kat starts by canceling cable and kicking her $240-a-month Starbucks habit. But what starts out as a simple effort to cut costs becomes an over-the-top obsession when Kat joins an eclectic but lovable group of savers called the Penny Pinchers Club. Soon she is pumping her gas at dawn (when it is thicker) and serving dinner made from food she retrieved at the grocery store dumpster. Kat is saving money, to be sure, but what she’s really saving is time, time she spends with Griff, their two kids, and an old flame who resurfaces at precisely the wrong moment, offering Kat a life where money is no object.

" This book was funny. It's definitely a "beach read" type of book. I laughed out loud. Great reminder that the grass is not always greener...work for what you really want. "

  • 5 out of 55 out of 55 out of 55 out of 55 out of 5 Megan | 2/7/2014

" I read this book while canning green beans yesterday. It is an EASY read. Kinda predictable, but a fun read. Nice bread from the deep thinking books I've been reading lately. :) "

  • 4 out of 54 out of 54 out of 54 out of 54 out of 5 Andrea | 1/30/2014

" I really enjoyed this book. I could so identify with Kat. Not only do I LOVE to shop, but I have also been in the sad position of finding emails to and from my now ex-boyfriend and another girl. And luckily, just like Kat, I had friends to help me through--just not friends that helped me save money in the process. Some of the ideas in the books I think I might try--pumping gas in the morning when its thicker and plugging appliances in to a power strip that you can turn off. Others, like dumpster diving, I couldn't do. I found myself thinking about Kat when I wasn't reading the story. I felt so sad for her. But the ending is a surprise--I won't tell you if it's good or bad, but I will tell you that I liked it! The Penny Pinchers Club is the first that I have read by Ms. Strohmeyer but it definitely won't be the last! "

" I am reading (listening, love the audio version) this book for the second time and it is just as enjoyable as the first time I read it. I can relate to all the bargain shopping and couponing, although I do it for other reasons than our main character. : ) "

  • 2 out of 52 out of 52 out of 52 out of 52 out of 5 Danielle | 1/16/2014

" Save Karyn and the Jen Lancaster books are so much better. This can't even compare to confessions of a shopaholic. I wish it had been better. I was expecting more. So many plot holes, so little time. "

" Definitely not the type of book I usually get (about a 40ish year old woman who's going to divorce). I read a couple books by Strohmeyer and they were about 20-something women, so I figured it'd be about the same type of person. Obviously way wrong, but this was a cute book. "

  • 2 out of 52 out of 52 out of 52 out of 52 out of 5 Sue | 11/11/2013

" Not as funny as some of her other titles but I did finish it, so it couldn't have been that bad! I like to read books by Vermont authors. "

  • 3 out of 53 out of 53 out of 53 out of 53 out of 5 Amanda | 10/25/2012

" This was a little more serious than some of Strohmeyer's other works, but a good read nonetheless. While I would have enjoyed seeing the plot fleshed out a little more, the characters were fun and lively, which is definitely one of Strohmeyer's strengths. "

" This was a light, easy read and I'm glad I read it. Sometimes it's fun to get lost in chick-lit. I could have done without the sex scenes (though there were very few) and the ending was a little rushed, but I enjoyed it overall. I'd rate this at a PG-13 if it were a movie. "

" I agree with the jacket cover...reading a Sarah Strohmeyer book is like opening a box of chocolates. I enjoyed this story line and how easy it is to read Sarah's books. The main flaw I had with this book was how she left out interaction with the daughter...that bugged me for some reason. "
