Warning: Not to be listened to after dark

Capturing witches, Binding boggarts, Driving away ghosts

For years, Old Gregory has been the Spook for the county, ridding the local villages of evil. Now his time is coming to an end. But who will take over for him? Twenty-nine apprentices have tried -- some floundered, some fled, some failed to stay alive.

Only Thomas Ward is left. He's the last hope; the last apprentice. Can Thomas succeed? Will he learn the difference between a benign witch and a malevolent one? Does the Spook's warning against girls with pointy shoes include Alice? And what will happen if Thomas accidentally frees Mother Malkin, the most evil witch in the county ... ?

“Delaney grabs readers by the throat and gives them a good shake in a smartly crafted story…The twisted horror is amply buffered by an exquisitely normal young hero, matter-of-fact prose, and a workaday normalcy. Still…bad things are always there to catch readers off guard. As the warning label on the cover notes, this is ‘Not to be read after dark.’”

About Joseph Delaney

Joseph Delaney (1945-2022) was an English teacher before becoming the bestselling author of the Spook's series, which has been published in 30 countries and sold millions of copies. Revenge of the Witch was adapted into a 2014 film, Seventh Son, by director Sergei Bodrov; its cast included Kit Harrington, Jeff Bridges, and Julianne Moore. He was the author of two other series of novels, Arena 13 and Aberrations. He lived in Lancashire, England, and most of the places in the Spook’s books are based on real places in Lancashire. The inspiration behind the stories often comes from local ghost stories and legends. The Spook’s Apprentice, The Spook’s Curse, and The Spook’s Secret have all been shortlisted for the Lancashire children’s Book for the Year Award. The Spook’s Apprentice won both the Sefton Book Award and the Hampshire Book Award.
