Dashing young Edmond Dantes has everything: a fine reputation, an appointment as captain of a ship, and the heart of a beautiful woman. But his perfect life is shattered when three jealous friends conspire to destroy him.

Falsely accused of a political crime, Edmond Dantes is locked away for life in the infamous prison at the French Chateau d’If. But it is there that he learns of a vast hidden treasure.

After fourteen years of hopeless imprisonment, Dantes makes his daring escape and follows his secret map to untold fortune. Disguised now as the mysterious and powerful Count of Monte Cristo, Edmond seeks out his enemies—and nothing will stand in the way of his just revenge.

Filled with thrilling episodes of betrayal, romance, and revenge, The Count of Monte Cristo is one of the greatest adventure stories ever written.

"this book is about the story of Edmond Dantes, a sailor who was wrongfully accused of treason and sent to life in prison without being told why or having a chance to defend himself.the story is about love, envy, friendship and most importantly revenge.Edmond sets out to take revenge on all those who did him wrong in one of the most elaborate schemes ive ever read. Edmond states at the beginning of the book, "No for heaven's sake! I was so insignificant!". this is ironic to me as he becomes such an important person in the lives of so many and causes the downfall and sometimes death of some of the highest figures in the french society. this book is easily one of the best books ive ever read due to the fact you can read a million times and still uncover new facts and tie together new people and be constantly amazed."

" The story is an interesting one with good twists to keep it moving forward. However, there are some tangents that made me wonder why this was included and, therefore, were distracting. I already knew the story and perhaps that was my undoing. About 3/4 way through the book, I found myself longing for the end and continually checking to see how much was left. Do not take my flagging interest as a condemnation of the book. I still consider it to have been worth the time put into it. "

" This is a great book. I like to mix up my books and every 4th book I listen to is a classic. Titles like Pride and Prejudice, Great Expectations, The Brothers Karamazov, For whom the bell tolls, etc. There is a reason why they are classics and that is that they are so well written that they stand the test of time and never get old. The Count of Monte Cristo belongs to be counted as one of the classics. A intricate tale of betrayal and revenge. John Lee does an excellent job narrating the novel. "

" This is my favorite book of all. The plot has twists and turns throughout and kept me riveted. I was in the 5th grade when I first read it but have enjoyed it over and over throughout the years. I believe I am on the 4th copy of this wonderful book and just thinking about it will reread it again soon. "

" Forget about it. Best book I have read in a long time...maybe best book I have ever read. Long as hell but it's needed to get the full feeling of revenge. This book makes modern underdog/man or woman vs world stories look childish. "
