With its rousing cry of “One for all, and all for one,” Alexandre Dumas’s thrilling adventure novel has captivated generations of readers since its initial publication in 1844. Action, intrigue, and romance abound in this swashbuckling epic, which traces a country lad’s path to the French court of the early 1600s and the glorious fraternity of the king’s men, the Musketeers.
A son of impoverished nobility, D’Artagnan arrives in Paris to find the Musketeers disbanded by the cunning Cardinal Richelieu, who hopes to seize power from the weak-willed Louis XIII. The daring and ambitious youth proves his mettle in the company of the famous Musketeers—Porthos, Athos, and Aramis—and joins them in a heroic struggle to defend the king and his lovely queen, Anne of Austria.

"Fast moving, swashbuckling, great fun. Yes there are a lot of deaths but given the period, early 1600s, and the constant warring going on in France it is not surprising. The Musketeers are half way between the knights and modern mercenaries and are willing to take on any foe in the name of king, country or a damsel in distress. They don't take themselves seriously, which given that they daily face death is a good thing. It's not surprising that there have been so many movies based on this book - it makes for great cinema and Dumas is great at slowing down the pace and setting the scene when a crucial event is about to take place. There is lots of intrigue and plotting which keeps up the tension. At the same time there is a genuine window into historical events and characters. A good read."

“Full of irresistible elements: swordplay, guns…intrigue, derring-do, loyalty, romance, famous historical names…A can’t-miss storytelling proposition.”
— Boston Globe“One of the finest adventure novels of all time. It has sword fights, espionage, significant jewelry, wonderfully devious villains, and all manner of high jinks. If you’ve been put off by one of the (many) lackluster film adaptations, do give the book a try—it’s wittier, livelier, cleverer, and more charming than any of its imitators.”
— Tor.com“Remains compelling and timeless.”
— Library Journal“I do not say there is no character as well drawn in Shakespeare [as D’Artagnan]. I do say there is none that I love so wholly.”
— Robert Louis Stevenson, author of Kim" One of my favorite novels of all time. :D "
— Ash, 2/17/2014" Amazing book, but still can't figure out why it is called the Three Musketeers when there are clearly Four of them. "
— Scott, 2/15/2014" Quite possibly my favorite book of all. All the film versions pale next to the original story. A great epic of French history. "
— David, 2/8/2014" I've always enjoyed this book. Unlike some classics - it truly is a work of literary art worthy of it's fanbase (some critically acclaimed, loved stories leave me stumped as to why they has a following). It's thorough with a complicated plot which addresses social and economic issues of the times (then and now). As well as solid, strong character development and relationship threads that are believable and tangible. "
— Julievans, 2/6/2014" The first couple hundred pages are a farcical romp through 17th century France and the Musketeers are not always the most likeable. Then the tension builds and Dumas' genius for character and intrigue come shining through. By chapter 47, I was completely riveted. Milady has to be one of the greatest literary villains of all time; makes me wonder if du Maurier was honoring her by giving Rebecca the last name de Winter? "
— K.M., 2/5/2014" Very good...Soap opera with swashbuckling action. Need to learn more about "branding" of fleur dy lis. "
— Adele, 2/4/2014" Everything in this novel is royal. "
— Noha, 2/2/2014" A- Very interesting - at times, I lost the plot b/c I wasn't paying attn enough, but super good, captivating read. Why wasn't it called the Four Muskateers, why is our hero kept out of it? Love, war, smarts, battle, life. Great stuff. "
— Cherie, 1/31/2014" A must read when you're into your teens. Incredibly well-paced, great characters, what else is there to say? "
— Claude, 1/30/2014" One of the greatest adventure novels ever written. Well worth your time. "
— John, 1/28/2014" Although the book itself is pretty long, you'll be surprised at how quickly you fly through this story as you watch the heroes and villains clash in 17th century Paris. "
— Daniel, 1/26/2014" Fun, however I liked The Count of Monte Cristo better. A classic worth reading. "
— Anita, 1/24/2014" One of my all time favorite books "
— Shannon, 1/23/2014" So good. I loved the gang wars between the cardinal's men and the musketeers and the eccentricities of honor and nobility. The whole dueling culture is so absurd and humorous. They're great characters and they just keep getting into trouble and handling it with style. It was a lot of fun and I really enjoyed it, although the epilogue made me a little sad. (view spoiler)[Just that they all went their separate ways. They were such good friends and I'd liked to have imagined them rabble rousing together after the story ended. (hide spoiler)] "
— Dustin, 1/23/2014" I really loved this. I'm realizing I love Alexandre Dumas books. This one reminded me of the Count of Monte Cristo which I also loved. I first sat down to read the Man in the Iron mask only to realize that it was number 4 of a series. I love series and continuing characters. I'm on the next one - Twenty Years after, we'll see if they're all as good as the first. "
— Miriam, 1/22/2014" Why did it take me so many years to pick this book up? I LOVED it, such a wildly entertaining read. I'm definitely adding it to my Top-10 list. "
— Morgan, 1/22/2014" love it- charming French adventures of musketeers with all the romance, danger and good and bad guys...also very nostalgic because of the old Russian movie I watched as a child. "
— Helena, 1/21/2014" Great writing...the three musketeers were not who I thought they were ! "
— April, 1/18/2014" Simply riveting, this book is. Loved every page of the book which gave little inkling about how the rest of the book would go. The ending is a big big surprise though I would've never known it was heading that way. Every character was so well-etched and kept getting more defined. Every loop in the story seems to end in the book's ending. Brilliant! "
— Shahnawaz, 1/18/2014" If reading in English, the best translation is the Oxford one which also benefits from historical notes that provide context. The penguin edition is an abomination, with overly modern language. "
— Michael, 1/18/2014" Beautiful, wonderfully written, master-piece..I'm running out of adjectives here! "
— Chaitanya, 1/18/2014" It's in French and my French isn't anywhere near that good "
— Verusex, 1/17/2014" For a good chunk of this novel I was left wanting. It seemed to lack much of the power that was the Count of Monte Cristo. BUT... the novel from the imprisonment of Milady to the conclusion was quite brilliant. Onward D'Artagnan! "
— Esteban, 1/16/2014" One of my favorites! [return][return]Milady is a fascinating character study. She deserves her own story. Yes, the evil, man-destroying succubus was stereotypical even by the time this was written, but Milady is so brilliantly written, I can happily look past that. "
— Molly, 1/15/2014" More interesting and complex than the standard movie plot depicts. "
— Nora, 1/14/2014" One of the only books I couldn't finish. "
— Marsa, 1/7/2014" This is one of my favorite books. It's a classic action-adventure story. It's a well written, fast paced, enjoyable read. "
— Karla, 1/7/2014" Another classic, but compared to The Count of Monte Cristo it is a very easy read indeed. If you start this one you will finish it, no matter what, i assure you! "
— Sim, 1/5/2014" I have thoroughly enjoyed everything I have read by Dumas thus far. His imagination is never ending and his humor is quick and witty. Nothing a movie can ever compare to! "
— Jenna, 1/5/2014" Alexandre Dumas is 2 for 2 with me. Such a good writer even in translation. "
— Jeff, 1/1/2014" What a shame I did not pay attention to this classic when I was in school. I missed a wonderful read for too many years. "
— Mike, 12/31/2013" This is one of my faviorite book. "
— Aya, 12/30/2013" Good book difficult to read because of language. "
— Jodi, 12/28/2013" I would have liked this more if I hadn't been so familiar with the story. Those movies we watched years ago stuck really close to the book, so there were few surprises. Still well written and very enjoyable. "
— Dixie, 12/26/2013" Not a difficult read. Good pace but you must suspend a little modern morality. "
— Tom, 12/25/2013" SO cool when you think That this book was written in 1840! "
— Vicky, 12/23/2013" Beautiful, wonderfully written, master-piece..I'm running out of adjectives here! "
— Chaitanya, 12/22/2013" Not breathtaking but highly entertaining. "
— Pepita, 12/20/2013" D'Artagnan joins the musketeers at the risk of his own life. He pursues conspirators plotting against the life of the king and the leader of the musketeers. Falls in love, and saves her life in the process. "
— J.smyth.pdx, 12/17/2013" Accept no substitutes! Movies cannot do it justice. Read it. Then read Ten Years Later, Twenty Years Afterward, and well, just read all the Dumas you can get your hands on. You won't regret it. And it will greatly enhance your pleasure when you read The Phoenix Guards by Steven Brust. "
— Robin, 12/11/2013" I loved this entire series. I can't believe I didn't read this until I was in my 40's. "
— Cynde, 12/2/2013" This book was a good read, an adventurous romp from a different era. Also ultimately a book about friendship, this is the best of the d'artagnan romances. "
— Blo, 11/27/2013" This book is far more kickass than any of the films based upon it. Bravo, Monseiur Dumas! "
— Jan, 11/19/2013" Another excellent adventure penned by Dumas. Full of sword-fights, romance, and intrigue, enmities becoming friendships and trust solidifying in heated moments of battle. This is a fabulous story. "
— Janine, 11/15/2013" Loved it and read the entire series! "
— Cheryl, 11/14/2013" I have thoroughly enjoyed everything I have read by Dumas thus far. His imagination is never ending and his humor is quick and witty. Nothing a movie can ever compare to! "
— Jenna, 11/9/2013" Royalty, diamonds, Frenchmen, cardinals, and swashbuckling aplenty. What more could you want? This classic adventure story follows the heroic young Musketeer (the bodyguards of the French court) D'Artagnan as he makes friends, fights duels, and falls in love with the wrong woman. "
— Erin, 11/6/2013" This book rates in my top 3 books ever. Perfect story of loyalty and friendship (and romance and humor and rousing swordfights...) "
— Valarie, 10/23/2013" Not breathtaking but highly entertaining. "
— Pepita, 10/22/2013" Very good story, or rather two stories involving the same characters. I found it satirical in its humor and great in its intrigue and adventure. Definitely the textbook definition of a swashbuckling adventure story. "
— Ben, 10/17/2013" Written in the old way with lots of side stories that drag on a bit but overall I enjoyed the book "
— Janfam, 8/5/2013" Some parts were good, other parts I thought were boring. "
— Ingrid, 8/4/2013" I remember thinking, as I read this book, "These men are the silliest of men I've ever read about." "
— Carron, 8/2/2013" Wow. I never knew these guys were really just fraternity boys--of the very worst sort, too. Sort of fun to read, if you can, you know, shrug off the misogyny and senseless violence. Looking forward to trying more Dumas, though. Hoping he comes through for me in the other books. "
— Shannon, 7/31/2013" Did not quite enjoy this as much as "Man in the Iron Mask" as there were far too many pages devoted to one character where the musketeers were completely absent. Book always picked up when any one of them was the focus. But still really enjoyed it. "
— Lauri, 6/2/2013" Why can't more classics be this entertaining. "
— Jagad5, 5/31/2013" Dumas takes you on a whirlwind of adventure as he follows leading man D'Artagnan into duel after duel! There were very fun surprises, some I was disappointed by, but overall an entertaining bedtime read :) "
— Noemi, 5/25/2013" Quite possibly my favorite book of all. All the film versions pale next to the original story. A great epic of French history. "
— David, 5/18/2013" Very good...Soap opera with swashbuckling action. Need to learn more about "branding" of fleur dy lis. "
— Adele, 4/23/2013" I never thought I'd read this book, but a severe bout of food poisoning made me pick it up due to lack of other options. It started a lasting affair with Dumas, is all I can say. "
— Madeeha, 4/20/2013" This was a fun book. I read a free copy of it on my phone. I've heard that there are newer and better translations that don't do as much prudish filtering of what Dumas wrote. As it stands, a few parts just didn't make much sense. A fun classic that is well worth reading. "
— Titus, 4/16/2013" A decent adventure in need of serious editing. "
— Donna, 4/3/2013" Long, but fun, in parts. "
— Robert, 3/18/2013" My favorite book ever. Nothing else to be said. "

— Estrella, 2/12/2013" A-MAY-ZING! More in depth review coming soon "
— JaSexxy, 2/11/2013" loved it. Dumas is hilarious, and the leads do battle with a truly evil foe. missed a five star rating because a lot of the implications of the various romantic entanglements went over my head. "
— Tom, 2/4/2013" A rollicking good read, but I had to wait til the movie came out before I could run around shouting All for one and one for All (well, I was only 10 :) "
— Chris, 1/23/2013" kayaknya zaman dulu murah sekali nyawa manusia. "senggol bacok" bukan lagi frase belaka. lu senggol, gua bacok. "
— Cimuth, 1/18/2013" It is obvious why this book is a classic. There is a lot of sword fighting action; there is intrigue; and there is love. The musketeers are true to each other so that friendship is exalted. I also enjoyed the history of time and place. "
— Diana, 1/14/2013" The Count of Monte Cristo is better. "
— Ashley, 12/10/2012" Loved it! Must read for everyone! "

— Hope, 11/26/2012" The book's eternal message:One for all,All for one!!. Nuff said!! "
— Meer, 11/7/2012" The Musketeers certainly are not the characters that are portrayed in the movies. Once I got past that, it wasn't a bad book. I liked the female villain, the Lady de Winter, a nice change of pace than your every day male villain. "
— Kaia, 10/20/2012" Absolutely fantastic book. It was a pleasure to read. Parts of it were familiar from movies and childrens books but nothing even comes close to this original tale. Lots of action mixed in with some serious tragedy and a good dash of side splitting hilarity. "
— Joshua, 9/16/2012" Read 170 pgs. Didnt love it ... The boys squabble with swords to the death as if they are using toy swords ... couldnt get into it. "
— Heidi, 9/12/2012" I read this with my son and wife in the evening as part of his history class. My wife and son found their interest in the story picked up about halfway through when Milady appeared to complicate matters. In the end, they agreed that it was not a bad read. "
— Ron, 8/23/2012" Love love loved this book. I would compare it to The Count of Monte Cristo book as far as the genre goes. It is very similar. It kept my attention the whole way through. "
— Celecta, 7/17/2012" love it- charming French adventures of musketeers with all the romance, danger and good and bad guys...also very nostalgic because of the old Russian movie I watched as a child. "
— Helena, 7/11/2012" It is obvious why this book is a classic. There is a lot of sword fighting action; there is intrigue; and there is love. The musketeers are true to each other so that friendship is exalted. I also enjoyed the history of time and place. "
— Diana, 7/6/2012" Classic adventure story. Antique voice, hard for modern readers who are easily bored. A lot of action, political intrigue, excitement, and a very sad love story. The movies have never done it justice. "
— Luckhawkins, 4/15/2012" I never realized that this book was historical fiction at the time it was written, but it makes a lot of sense. Adventure, romance, swashbuckling, etc. I didn't like it as much as the Count of Monte Cristo, but it was still fun, despite some awkward class and gender issues. "
— Moonit, 3/21/2012" I tried listening to this book an Audio and I got through to the 5th or 6th CD and I STILL wasn't into it. I really feel that I gave it the benefit of the doubt but I think I'll stick to the old school movie on this one! "
— Vanessa, 3/5/2012" I would have to say that this was a dense read. There were plot twists and action and adventure all around, and I was actually a little sad to see it end. "
— Cory, 3/4/2012" (Preserved for comment thread: I'm reading the Project Gutenberg e-book. Frustratingly, I can't identify the translator.) "

— Evan, 2/26/2012" This was a fun book. I read a free copy of it on my phone. I've heard that there are newer and better translations that don't do as much prudish filtering of what Dumas wrote. As it stands, a few parts just didn't make much sense. A fun classic that is well worth reading. "
— Titus, 2/21/2012" Definitely exciting just a little confusing. Maybe I'll try again when I can read on a higher level. "

— Jyoti, 2/4/2012" This is a classic hero story, without the typical happy ending. I also liked the very black and white characters, where you know who the good ones are and the bad ones are. "

— Wendy, 8/11/2011" I liked the book but it could have been cut in half and been better. Next time I'll read the abridged version. But the story was really good. "
— Steve, 7/26/2011" A- Very interesting - at times, I lost the plot b/c I wasn't paying attn enough, but super good, captivating read. Why wasn't it called the Four Muskateers, why is our hero kept out of it? Love, war, smarts, battle, life. Great stuff. "

— Ash, 4/23/2011" I loved it until the end. The romantic in me despises unhappy endings. Sigh. "
— Emma, 2/11/2011" For once, I can actually say that the movie was better than the book. "
— Kimberly, 2/3/2011" Very good. I enjoy the way it is written--lots of glorious words to make a small point. Only do not be deceived by a: the title or b: the Leo DiCaprio film. It will only confuse you by the end. "
— Allison, 1/27/2011" Wonderful but very sad at the end "
— Kimberly, 1/25/2011" Dumas is good at the type of books he writes. Count of Monte Cristo being his best. This one is good, but not amazing. Its long and dramatic. "
— Kelli, 1/24/2011" Not much "derring-do" as said in the book preview, but still a nice classic. A good read. "
— Mike, 1/20/2011Alexandre Dumas (1802–1870), French novelist and playwright, was one of the most famous and prolific French writers of the nineteenth century, producing some 250 books.
