Publisher Description

The eighty-mile journey of a common carpenter and a simple peasant girl is one of the most powerful stories in history. As books go out of print and stories fade from memory, the journey of Joseph and Mary and her delivery inside a common barn continues to bless and inspire hope in people around the world. Donna VanLiere's retelling shows that the story of the Nativity is alive in our modern world.

"It only took me about 20 minutes to read this book. The author added illustrations and wrote a narrative of Mary and Joseph's journey to Bethlehem and the birth of Christ. I cried while reading it. I have never really thought much about how difficult the journey must have been for Mary, riding on a donkey while at a full term pregnancy. Of course we don't know what exactly Mary and Joseph's conversation may have been while traveling to Bethlehem, but I really enjoyed thinking of things from Mary and Joseph's point of view. This is a great book to read at Christmastime or any time."

" Donna VanLiere always give us something for Christmas that is fantastic. The Christmas Journey is the retelling of the Nativity Story but with a much more realistic presentation. As she says, "No glamorized, sanitized, commercialized version". From cow patties to scratchy, smelly hay to an anxious, unprepared husband, accompanied by wonderful illustrations, this story tells of the birth of the Christ child with truth and reality. It is a very short read (about 30 mins), and I think would be a wonderful family book to read aloud every single Christmas. "

" I thought it was a creative take on the original story. It added depth by focusing on Mary and Joseph's worries and anticipation. Great book for bringing the focus of Christmas where it should be. Worth reading and would recommend. "

" This is a little short book that looks like it might be for children. IT'S NOT! The story from Luke is given on the first few pages and then the author takes the scriptures and makes a story from them telling about the feeling, hopes, fears, etc of Mary and Joseph. It brings the story to life and makes it very real. "
