Donna VanLiere's books movingly portray ordinary people reaching for more meaningful lives. In The Christmas Promise, she follows two seemingly separate individuals and shows how their lives intersect. Chaz McConnell realizes that his life is empty—and he's made it that way. He goes home every night to a bare apartment. For the first time in his life, he's working at a job that will last more than a few weeks, as security for Wilson's Department Store. Trying to reach out, he befriends 4-year-old Donovan, whose mother is part of the janitorial team at Wilson's. Gloria Bailey finds it easy to care for families in need but just can't seem to bridge the gap with her cantankerous neighbor, 60-something widow Miriam Lloyd Davies. When Miriam goes away for a week and a pipe bursts she comes home to a house under water. Gloria, in an act of kindness—or maybe insanity—invites Miriam to stay at her house until a hotel room becomes available. They eventually realize they have more in common than they ever thought. In this beautiful, deeply poignant novel, we are reminded that the past is never far behind and all of us are longing for a place to call home.

"Excellent book! I've read VanLiere before and liked her writing style. It was a reflective book with a good story line. Made me want to be more altruistic. The ending was a "miracle" so a little far fetched, but what the heck - it's a Christmas book. Nice quiet read before Christmas."

“A delightful book.
— Tampa Tribune & Times on The Christmas ShoesA cozy, inspirational holiday tale.
— Publishers Weekly on The Christmas BlessingA magical story of second chances that will stay with readers long after the ornaments have been put away.
— Bookpage on The Christmas HopeDonna VanLiere does a superior job of dramatizing her story in The Christmas Hope.
— AudioFile magazine on The Christmas Hope" A seasonal plot about multiple characters whose stories eventually weave together. Amusing, moving, and well worth reading. "
— Carol, 2/12/2014" Who doesn't love a book with a happy ending. I love Christmas books !!! "
— Donna, 2/11/2014" This was a total waste of time. I kept trying to find a reason to read it. Never did "
— Tinker, 2/10/2014" Right from the beginning, it has been established that this novel is set out to be a feel-good Christmas story. It has succeeded in that, but it also sacrificed effective, could-have-been-better storytelling in the process. The plot and characters were too convenient, in my opinion, and would've probably worked in a medium (say, a movie) other than a novel. "
— Mars, 2/9/2014" OK, a little less uplifting than the other two The Christmas Shoes & The Christmas Blessing. A bit predictable and it seemed to jump around for no good reason at times. Still a good quick Christmas read. "
— Patrick, 1/27/2014" This on was okay. I don't care to read anything that has "not nice words" the first 3 books did not need any bad words to make them great to read and neither does this one. It was disappointing. They are a spiritual up lifting novels and they need to stay like that. "
— Carole, 1/26/2014" These are sappy and predictable. But good and heartwarming and sometimes that's what you need. "
— Kim, 1/23/2014" Good magical feeling about it. The characters were good. It had the feel of a Hallmark TV movie. "
— Angie, 1/22/2014" Feel good spirit of Xmas kinda book. Good quick Xmas read! "
— Kristen, 1/17/2014" Lots of interesting characters and story lines that converge in the end. A very heartwarming and satisfying novel. "
— Robynn, 1/12/2014" Great story line, good message but the way it was written had me confused at times, always in first character but switching from one character to the next and leaving you wondering. "
— Bonnie, 11/28/2013" I read this book just this past Christmas. It's a quick, easy read, but really reminds you the true meaning of Christmas. I love how VanLiere develops her characters and how the story finally comes together! "

— Mom, 8/12/2013" We never know the blessings that may come into our lives by helping others. While set in the Chrismas season, it's a good reminder about how much we can get by looking beyond ourselves even though at times it can be rather overwhelming. "
— Christine, 7/18/2013" So far very traditional... "
— Sharon, 5/6/2013" So who knew there were 2 books titled The Christmas Promise but different authors? Leave it to me to get the wrong book. Will be starting the correct book soon, before Monday book club! "
