A threat is called into the LAPD Bomb Squad, a team dispatched to a house whose owner is away, and a bomb disguised inside photography equipment exploded in the kitchen. But it is a second bomb hidden in the basement that has devastating consequences—half of the entire Bomb Squad is obliterated within seconds.
The fragmented unit turns to Dick Stahl, a former Bomb Squad commander who now operates his own private security company. Having just returned from a grueling job in Mexico, Stahl is reluctant to accept the offer, but senior technicians he had trained were among those killed. On his first day back at the head of the squad, Stahl's team is dispatched to a suspected car bomb outside a gas station. It quickly becomes clear to him that they are dealing with the same mastermind behind the weapon that killed fourteen highly trained men and women barely twenty-four hours before—and that the intended target may be the Bomb Squad itself.
As the shadowy organization sponsoring this campaign of terror puts increasing pressure on the bomb maker, and Stahl becomes dangerously entangled with a member of his own team, the fuse on this high-stakes plot only burns faster. The Bomb Maker is Thomas Perry's biggest, most unstoppable thriller yet.

"I found this one to be wonderfully well researched and a real page turner. If I had any complaints it would be these. It ended far too abruptly and the main character was one I could hear more about in other stories, but he's a little "too perfect" in my opinion. Additionally, we didn't get nearly enough motivation or back story about the antagonist in this book at all. The narrator wasn't that great either, compared to the other readers of Perry's books, I found this talent to be a little harder to get comfortable with. "

" Live and learn, I guess. I went back and listened again. I want to walk back my previous review. I still don't like the narration, sorry Mr. Barrett, but I decided to try the book again. I'm so glad I did. I realize this is a very good, very different book. If you can get past the narration, or even better if it is only me that's bothered, you will find great characters and Perry's usual depth of research forming an excellent story. Peek inside the bomber's mind and the minds of the police who are on the trail. "
— TPerrySuperFan, 3/30/2024" You can't win em all I guess. I have voraciously consumed and eagerly awaited every new Thomas Perry book. Started with the Jane Whitefield series and ate up pretty much everything else. The narrator's voice is so annoying, I had to stop listening. Sorry Mr Barrett, I hope that character is gone from your repertoire. I have vision problems so I can't pick up the print version. Listen to the sample before you buy, I'm sure the content is as expected from one of my all-time favorite authors, if you can stand the narration. "
