R is for Ricochet is another thrilling installment in Sue Grafton's Kinsey Millhone series.
Reba Lafferty was a daughter of privilege, the only child of an adoring father. Over the years, he quietly settled her many scrapes with the law, but he wasn't there for her when she was convicted of embezzlement and sent to the California Institute for Women. Now, at thirty-two, she is about to be paroled, having served twenty-two months of a four-year sentence. Nord Lafferty wants to be sure she stays straight, stays at home and away from the drugs, the booze, the gamblers.
It seems a straightforward assignment for Kinsey: babysit Reba until she settles in, make sure she follows all the rules of her parole. Maybe all of a week's work. Nothing untoward–the woman seems remorseful and friendly. And the money is good. But life is never that simple, and Reba is out of prison less than 24 hours when one of her old crowd comes circling around.
Readers have come to expect the unexpected from Sue Grafton, and R is for Ricochet is no exception. In it, a complex and clever money-laundering scheme is just a cover for a novel that is all about love: love gone wrong, love betrayed, love denied. And love avenged. For Reba Lafferty, its moral is clear: Sometimes what you hand out in life comes back to bite you in the ass. Sometimes the good guys win, even when they lose.

"It's so funny to read a book set in 1987 without cell phones and a computer in every home. So much of Kinsey's work could be done online now instead of running everywhere and if she wanted to talk to someone she could call their cell instead of driving from LA to Vegas! "
— Crystal (4 out of 5 stars)
“[A] first-class series.”
— New York Times Book Review“Grafton’s alphabet thrillers just keep getting better.”
— USA Today“A refreshing heroine.”
— Washington Post Book World“If you haven’t tried [Grafton] yet, you’re missing a sterling example of the mystery writer’s craft.”
— Entertainment Weekly" Not my favorite genre and a little formulaic. "
— Florence, 2/19/2014" A pretty good entry in the fairly reliable Kinsey Millhone series. Plutocrat's daughter Reba Lafferty was a wild one who mixed with bad company until finally the law caught up with her and put her away for a few years. Now she's due out on probation, and adoring daddy Nord Lafferty commissions Kinsey to babysit his daughter and make sure she settles back into civilian life, this time without all the booze and the drugs and stuff. And, of course, it proves to be not nearly so simple as anyone expected . . . Lots of fun to read, somewhat forgettable afterwards. "
— John, 2/14/2014" I didn't like this book as much as the others, maybe because it was different. "
— Gina, 2/4/2014" Very quick read in the Kinsey Millhone series. I have enjoyed all of the books in this series. "
— Shari, 1/28/2014" First Grafton I've read in eons, and it's like reconnecting with a high school friend. Kinsey hasn't changed, and neither has her turf. Good solid PI work. "
— Joanne, 1/25/2014" I'd say this is my least favorite of the Sue Grafton series. My mind glazed over with all the talk of extortion and money laundering. If this had been the first book of this series that I had read, I wouldn't have finished it, yet alone read another. However, I know that any author can write a loser and I am ready to move on to the next in the series. "
— Julie, 1/23/2014" Not my favorite Sue Grafton - I prefer the ones that involve murders, not white-collar crimes, but it was still pretty good. "
— Alyssa, 1/21/2014" Another great alphabet mystery. I enjoyed listening to this one, the characters were good and the story was unusual. "
— Jan, 1/18/2014" Listened to this book. Had a few twists and turns but was somewhat predicable. Unbelievable in parts due to main character's willingness to go along with other character. "
— Marleen, 1/5/2014" A good story - kept my interest till the final twist. "
— Roy, 12/14/2013" One of the BEST books I have ever read. Brought tears to my eyes. "
— Kay, 12/13/2013" I always enjoy her books. I esp. like it when Kinsey has a boyfriend - like in this one. "
— Allison, 12/11/2013" Not her best. Even reading it twice, since I had read it before, didn't improve it. "
— Palmreader, 11/24/2013" Didn't care for this one. "
— Robbie, 11/2/2013" Kinsey is such a great, fun character! And I enjoyed this book very much . . . I like the friendship that she and Reba developed . . . it was a good one! "
— Lisa, 7/7/2013" Wasn't a book I would normally read, I read it for my bookclub the storyline was ok but perdictable I don't think it is an author I will pick up in the future however I do think she has caught onto a cute trend of going through the alphabet "
— Nicole, 5/22/2013" I have read a few of Sue Grafton's books but I found this one not as interesting as some of the others I have read. The main plot centred around finanical problems to much and this took the whole crime/thriller aspect out of the book. "
— Karen, 3/26/2013" Sue Grafton is one of my fav authors and the Kinsey Millhone Series is one of the best. This book was a hard to put down book which I love. "
— Jeanette, 2/12/2013" Standard Grafton Book. Interesting quick read. "
— Erik, 1/1/2013" This one had a little different plot than some of the others, I thought it was good. They seem to be getting better as you go along. "
— Mom, 9/8/2012" Very different than the other Kinsey's I've read, but in a good way. It's excellent that Grafton always takes steps to keep things fresh! "
— Christine, 4/5/2012" See my review on Sue Grafton's "A is for Alibi" for info on what I think of this series. "
— Hope, 3/17/2012" It was OK...not as exciting as i expected it to be... "
— Chioma, 3/5/2012" The story proceeds pretty fast and intense till the end, but the end is sulky. It would have been a 4-star if the end was thrilling. "
— Venkatasubramaniam, 9/2/2011" Very disappointing addition to this series - hardly any action and a unimaginative plot "
— Gini, 6/22/2011" Since my books are alphabetized, I think I really appreciate Sue's titles. She has signed all my books, and I appreciate that, too! Great book, just keep reading. She isnt done yet! "
— Margiek2000, 5/24/2011" A good story - kept my interest till the final twist. "
— Roy, 5/23/2011" I think I'm going to VERY sorry when Ms Grafton runs out of letters in the alphabet! "
— Karen, 5/18/2011" This one wasn't as action packed as others in the series... I found myself getting bored at times. It was okay, but not great. "
— Marcie, 5/5/2011" This one was top-notch... interesting, thrilling ending, and all major loops were closed. Great addition to the series! "
— Marissa, 4/26/2011" Horrible, juvenile, no substance basically tacky with no purpose unless one likes harlequin romances "
— Stan, 4/16/2011" Missed this one somehow. ok story. I sort of like Kinsey, which is why I read these books. but there is way too much (uninteresting) minutiae in the writing. "
— Leslie, 4/5/2011" Grafton has changed in my opinion. Kinsey has a boyfriend and there are some pretty steamy parts. I either don't remember this with in the last husband/boyfriend relationships or she has changed. Anyway, it was great as always "
— Carol, 2/24/2011" Mustang, Quarter lb.er with cheese and crazy people. "
— April, 2/23/2011" I like all of the Kinsey Milhone mysteries. Grandma Mazur is my favorite character. "
— Jennifer, 2/9/2011" I read all the books in this series. They are nothing earth-shattering and after reading a few, you can see the formula. But I like the Kinsey character and they are easy and fun to read. "
— Thenerdmom, 12/31/2010" Grafton continuously creates interesting characters and places them in believable, interesting scenarios. "
— Barb, 12/21/2010" love the fact she's not a starring in this..nice twist! "
