A woman with a murky past who kills herself—or was it murder? A spoiled kid awash in gambling debt who thinks he can beat the system. A lovely woman whose life is about to splinter into a thousand fragments. A professional shoplifting ring working for the Mob, racking up millions from stolen goods. A wandering husband, rich and ruthless. A dirty cop so entrenched on the force he is immune to exposure. A sinister gangster, conscienceless and brutal. A lonely widower mourning the death of his lover, desperate for answers, which may be worse than the pain of his loss. A private detective, Kinsey Millhone, whose thirty-eighth-birthday gift is a punch in the face that leaves her with two black eyes and a busted nose. And an elegant and powerful businessman whose dealings are defnitely outside the law: the magus at the center of the web. V: Victim. Violence. Vengeance.

"I have read all of Sue Grafton's alphabet series and rate this as her best ever yet! Mystery, violence, romance, this book has it all. A gangster one couldn't help liking, crooks one couldn't help sympathising with and villains to hate. All served up with the usual cast of resident characters who ooze with personality. Sue Grafton's books just get better and better, unlike some authors who clearly write under pressure after the first dozen or so bestsellers. Well recommended - and you don't need to start her series from the beginning - all the books stand alone."

Terrific.
— BooklistThe author has hit a high mark with her latest offering, a complex tale of love, betrayal, ambition, and, of course, murder…The only bad thing: There are just four letters left in the alphabet.
— The Associated PressGrafton exhibits the pace, form, and technique of a marathon champ in her latest.
— The Kansas City StarOne of Kinsey Millhone’s best outings…must reading for Grafton fans.
— The Globe and Mail (Canada)Central to the books’ appeal is not the hoodlums and their crimes—which are often fueled by alcohol or stupidity rather than the epic, high-stakes evil driving other crime books—but rather Kinsey herself…She is witty and weary and a lot of fun.
— Los Angeles TimesSure to satisfy.
— USA Today" Love this series. My only complaint is waiting for the next one to come out "
— Cheryl, 2/11/2014" This book was good except there was some bad language. "
— Debbie, 1/31/2014" This installment was a bit of a departure from previous books in terms of style. Still good, but maybe not as good as previous outings. "
— Samantha, 1/29/2014" I have read all of her books and loved them, easy reading and it's nice to visit familiar characters again. At times I found some of the detail redundant, either way I still loved the book and the the story line. I'm looking forward to the next 4 books and wondering what 'Z' will be titled???? Hmmm...'Zodiac', Zinfandel', 'Zig Zag'...Hmmm. "
— Marlene, 1/25/2014" I love Kinsey and the series. She keeps them fresh and I look forward to the next one, although we 're closing in on Z. "
— Becky, 1/14/2014" One of the most wonderful things about this series is how each book is better than the one before. Sue Grafton is one of our best writers working today, and this multi-layered, complicated, and immensely entertaining book is a tribute to her talent and growth as a writer. "
— Lee, 1/12/2014" I wasn't sure I would like the changes in style, using more than just Kinsey's point of view. But it was good. Just took some getting used to. "
— R.E., 1/10/2014" Definitely not the best in the series. I usually enjoy these books as a fun easy read, but found I had to force myself through parts of this one. I give it 3 stars because I still enjoy Rosie's Hungarian food. "
— Becky, 1/9/2014" Another Kinsey Millhone case. Shoplifting nationwide theft ring headed by gangster with a heart of gold. Romance , but not for Kinsey, of course; black eyes for Kinsey. "
— Jeanne, 1/8/2014" I've read her entire series and haven't tired of them!!! Usually a series this long gets boring, or too repetative, but Ms. Grafton does a good job of keeping me entertained. Always love her eclectic characters, and this time was no exception. "
— Janice, 1/5/2014" Very goog. "
— Barb, 1/2/2014" As usual, I enjoyed this Kinsey Milhone mystery. A bit lighter in tone, it kept me interested even if I didn't truly bite my nails. Neighbor Henry was missing in this one ... caring for his ailing sister, and I missed him. But overall, worth waiting for on the library rota. "
— Nancy, 12/25/2013" Sue Grafton can't write fast enough for me. I wait eagerly for the next novel. "
— Pam, 12/12/2013" Much better than her last one. If you've been reading this series, this is a good one. "
— Connie, 11/15/2013" It's been a while since I hung out with Kinsey, and I was very glad to renew our acquaintance! This one, like so many of the others, was a good, solid read. "
— Christina, 11/4/2013" I was extremely disappointed in this book. I have read all of Sue Grafto's books and this is the only one I had trouble finishing.. It was boring and long and much too wordy. NOt sure if I will bother to try the next one. "
— Sue, 10/14/2013" Typical Kinsey Millhone mystery. Interesting stuff about shoplifting rings. "
— Steve, 9/8/2013" Excellent author and series "
— Carol, 4/3/2013" I've read all of the alphabet books by Sue Grafton. I wonder what she will do once she gets to the letter "Z". "
— Valerie, 12/29/2012" I've been with this series since the beginning and have enjoyed the growth in Kinsey. The mysteries are satisfying also. "
— Jewell, 10/26/2012" Always love these books. This one was especially good and kept me guessing. "
— Jenny, 4/10/2012" I love all her books....although I didn't like this book as well as many of her earlier books. I did like the ending and was happy that the two characters were able to escape. "
— Renie, 2/5/2012" Kinsey is a likable heroine and this series of A to ? are fun and easy to read. "
