Internationally acclaimed forensic anthropologist and New York Times bestselling author Kathy Reichs explores Stockholm syndrome—the psychology of a captive submitting to the ideology of a captor—in this mesmerizing new thriller.
The bones of three young women are unearthed in the basement of a Montreal pizza parlor, and forensic anthropologist Tempe Brennan has unsolved murder on her mind as she examines the shallowly buried remains. Coming up against a homicide cop who is convinced the dead have been entombed on the site for centuries, Tempe perseveres, even as her own relationship with Detective Andrew Ryan is at a delicate turning point. In the lab, the clean, well-preserved bones offer few clues. But when carbon-14 dating confirms her hunch that these were recent deaths despite the antique buttons found near the bodies, Tempe finds herself drawn deep into a web of evil from which there may be no escape. Women have disappeared, never to return...and she may be next.

"Yet another book that has a cracking pace to build up to the climax of the story that just keeps on going. I really enjoy reading this series, but find it more and more grating that Tempe goes ahead and puts herself into dangerous situations time and time again without consulting the people whose job it is to actually do these things!! Anyway, it's still four stars as I did enjoy it, staying up to past midnight at least two nights running turning the pages."
— Susanne (4 out of 5 stars)
“What’s best about Reichs, and often unappreciated in reviews, is not the informative detail that she brings to Tempe’s forensic sleuthing, though that’s certainly engrossing. It’s the same well-observed detail and incisive analysis applied to other aspects of the story.”
— Publishers Weekly“A fast-paced and suspenseful mystery in a deservedly popular series.”
— Booklist" I listened to the abridged audiobook version of this title (hope that counts as "reading" it....). The plot was good, and I didn't feel like I was missing any important details. If anything, I was glad to not have to listen to the small details that I already know, since this is a series with repeat characters and relationships that I am already familiar with and no longer need the history of. "
— Erica, 2/8/2014" lumayan deh.... walau kadang nyebelin karena disana-sini diselipin kalimat pake bahasa perancis secara tokohnya ceritanya hidupnya di Montreal, Canada "
— Ira, 2/7/2014" Another page turner for Tempe! 3 skeletons in the basement of the pizza parlor in Montreal. New relationship with Ryan. Just gets Charlie the cockatiel to share with Ryan. His daughter Lily is introduced at the end of the book. I like the series by Kathy Reichs! "
— Susan, 2/6/2014" If you like the Bones tv series, this is nothing like it. Ok, so the tv series is based off of this author's books, but Temperance Brennen is nothing in the book like she is on the show. However that being said, while I'm a huge fan of the show, I also like the books. Basically, you have the anthropologist figuring out who the body is and who dun it, and throw in a little of her personal life and drama. They are engaging and enjoyable. Warning - she has no issue with swear words. This one actually has less than some, but some have quite a bit. The main character doesn't use a lot, and uses the milder ones generally, but bad guys and cops don't mind turning the air blue on occasion. "
— Keilani, 1/28/2014" An excellent book, as always! "
— Sarah, 12/27/2013" I like this series though it leans more toward thriller than mystery than I generally like. I liked this book in the series more than some of the previous ones. I wish Temperance was a little more confident sometimes, but it's a great series intellectually. "
— Robyn, 12/27/2013" I enjoyed the plot as a whole in this book. It followed through very well all through the story & characters & movement with in the story connected well. The forensic files of Kathy Reichs at the close of the book seemed to lend even more chilling reality to this story. "
— Dee, 12/19/2013" I so enjoy reading Tempe's clashes with Claudel...especially when she gets the upper hand! "
— Kathy, 12/16/2013" An interesting premise, from the author's own case, but contrived at times. Doubtful that a forensic scientist would involve herself in an actual investigation to this extent, and with the authorities' blessing at the end. A good continuation of her personal story, however. "
— Nancy, 12/12/2013" Reliably good series with a sense of growth and evolution in each new installment. "
— Roberta, 12/4/2013" This is a good mystery although it has too much forensic detail for me. I liked the relationship stuff with Tempe and Ryan. "
— Joy, 11/29/2013" This was my first book by this author. I really enjoyed it and I will definitely read more of her books. "
— Crystal, 10/13/2013" I like the references to real life cases in this one. I'll avoid saying which ones, as it may give away major plot points! :) "
— Guthrie, 8/27/2013" Good, but not my favorite T. Brennan. Could have done without some of the silly teenage angst over come-and-go boyfriend, Ryan, and a few of her thoughts were dopey, but still a fun read. "
— Kw, 7/15/2013" Another good read from the Temperance Brennan series. "
— Karin, 6/27/2013" The more of these books I read, the more of an idiot I start to think this Doctor is... Also, they are becoming quite repetitive in nature, always the same thing happening, only the slightest differences evident. It's too bad that Darwin's theory doesn't always play out true in books... "
— Courtney, 6/8/2013" This one was a little different than some of the others. I like her books. "
— Brent, 4/3/2013" First Kathy Reichs book I ever picked up. :) It was a gift from my high shcool librarian, whose known me since 5th grade. "
— Yenny, 2/5/2013" Good mystery. Lots of intrigue. A little too dramatic at the end, but not bad. "
— Linda, 12/29/2012" Less annoying and more compelling than her earlier novels. Still the obnoxious insistence that every chapter ends with a cliffhanger. "
— Trina, 7/15/2012" As with all other Temperance Brennan books, I enjoyed this book too. My only complaint is that the endings are getting a little predictabel. Tempe gets herself into trouble near the end and it is resolved very quickly, usually within the chapter! "
— Alcy_girl, 2/23/2012" Whodunit, picked it up for no brain strain reading on a rainy day. "
— Stephen, 2/7/2012" I like the tv show a lot, but Reich's characterization reads pretty flat, similar to Patricia Cornwell. "
— Andrea, 7/5/2011" This was my first Kathy Reich's book and I totally fell in love with it!!! It's so good and I've been through all her books now! Way to go Kathy! "
— Gabyby, 5/18/2011" The subject matter, kidnapped and tortured teenaged girls, was disturbing so it is hard for me to get past that to critique the book on anything else. I did finish the book but did not consider myself better for it. "
— Miriam, 4/25/2011" Really enjoyable page-turner. Fast paced enough to keep the interest without being confusing. My first Kathy Reichs book but definitely not my last. "
— Nicola, 4/7/2011" The storylines seem to be getting better each read. "
— Emily, 3/18/2011" Dentro do tema que é a antropologia forense, já li alguns um pouco melhores. No entanto foi uma boa leitura. "
— Catarina, 3/13/2011" I think this was one of the best books so far in the series. The are they or aren't they going to get together aspect made another point that kept me going. "
— Kendra, 2/26/2011" Enjoyed this when I read it a few months ago. Forensic anthropologist explores mystery of bodies found in pizza shop basement. Picked up this copy at library sale for swap. "
— Beth, 2/24/2011" Doctor Temperance Brennan doesn't have easy life. She comes to Montreal in December to examine the bones that Homicide detective Luc Claudel consider historic. Anrew Ryan is very mysterious, so also Tempe's personal life is hard. But the answers don't come fast as more women are disappearing. "
— Anna, 2/11/2011" Another good read from the Temperance Brennan series. "
— Karin, 1/30/2011" Entirely set in Montreal. I missed Pete and Boyd, but Claudel was a hoot. "
— Cyn, 1/19/2011" although it was again up to her usual standards, this one was more disturbing to me than the rest...i think it had something to do with the 'girl in a box' underage sex slave theme...i have trouble imagining being subjected to that kind of abuse, imagining it way too well... "
— Amanda, 1/14/2011" AWESOME interaction between Andrew and Tempe. Love how the characters are developing... but very sad that they deal with certain crimes. "
— Kaylee, 1/12/2011" Criminals minds serial killer meets bones. "
— Megan, 1/11/2011" This was the last of the Kathy Reichs books that I've read. I loved them up until this one, this one just felt like she was bored. Maybe it's just me. "
— Lauretta, 1/6/2011" Really, as much of a fan as I am of the series this is one of the better ones. Trying to figure out who the pizza parlour victims are while dealing with all the lovers she has hanging in the wings and the pesky blokes trying to kill her.

Well worth the effort to give this a read "
