In a house under renovation, a plumber uncovers a cellar no one knew about, and makes a rather grisly discovery -- a decapitated chicken, animal bones, and cauldrons containing beads, feathers, and other relics of religious ceremonies. In the center of the shrine is the skull of a teenage girl. Meanwhile, on a nearby lakeshore, the headless body of a teenage boy is found by a man walking his dog.

Led by a preacher turned politician, citizen vigilantes blame devil worshippers and Wiccans and begin a witch hunt, intent on seeking revenge. Forensic anthropologist Temperance Brennan -- "five-five, feisty, and forty-plus" -- is called in to investigate, and a complex and gripping tale unfolds in this deadly mix of voodoo, Santería, and devil worship.

With a popular series on Fox -- now in its third season and in full syndication -- Kathy Reichs has established herself as the dominant talent in forensic mystery writing. Devil Bones, her eleventh taut, always surprising, scientifically fascinating mystery features Reichs's signature blend of forensic descriptions that "chill to the bone" (Entertainment Weekly) and the surprising plot twists that have made her a number one bestselling author in the United States and around the world. " An excellent story that keeps you reading all night. "

" A Temperance Brennan novel, starting with a contractor who discovers a hidden cellar in a house he is remodeling, filled with voodoo items and a human skull. A few days later a body of a boy is found by a river, also with satanic overtones, and another murder follows. Linking the murders and sorting through suspects fills the rest of the book. I did not like it as well as most of her other books. "

" Very similar to an episode of Bones, but I felt like it dragged on longer than necesssary. "

  • 5 out of 55 out of 55 out of 55 out of 55 out of 5 Tony Rothwell | 2/4/2014

" A darker Kathy Reichs but not as dark as Patricia Cornwell. Tempe (our hero) is going through a bad time in her life but I really felt for her. It's that good. "

  • 3 out of 53 out of 53 out of 53 out of 53 out of 5 Christina | 1/30/2014

" Another good one in the series, but not the best one. I had a hard time getting into the story for some reason. The plot seemed to drag on. In these kinds of books, I prefer a faster pace of action in the story. However, I am looking forward to the next one in the series. I recommend all of the books in this series. And I love the TV show Bones that is based on the Temperance Brennan series of books. "

" I read this because I love the TV show Bones. Not even close. The characters weren't as engaging as the TV ones. :) It was mediocre, but as I read it on vacation, at least it was easy to keep track of the storyline! "

  • 4 out of 54 out of 54 out of 54 out of 54 out of 5 Andrea | 1/22/2014

" Enjoyed listening to this one much better than others because I finally figured out I do not like Barbara Rosenblat's reading style. She portrays Tempe as humorless and stiff and that was turning me off to the series. Hopefully Linda Emond narrates the rest of the series! Story pretty good too but I thought it kind of went off in a few too many tangents. "
