Now in mass market from the bestselling author, forensic anthropologist, and producer of the FOX television hit Bones—the riveting #1 New York Times bestselling Temperance Brennan novel.
In a house under renovation in Charlotte, North Carolina, a plumber discovers a forgotten cellar, and some rather grisly remains—the severed head of a teenage girl, several decapitated chickens, and a couple of cauldrons containing beads, feathers, bones, and other relics of religious ceremonies. In a river not far away, an adolescent boy’s torso carved with a pentagram, is found. Are these crimes the work of Satanists and devil worshippers?
Nothing is clear, neither when the deaths occurred, nor where. Was the skull brought to the cellar or was the girl murdered there? As Temperance Brennan is called in to investigate, citizen vigilantes intent on a witch hunt are led by a preacher turned politician, looking for revenge.

"Enjoyed listening to this one much better than others because I finally figured out I do not like Barbara Rosenblat's reading style. She portrays Tempe as humorless and stiff and that was turning me off to the series. Hopefully Linda Emond narrates the rest of the series! Story pretty good too but I thought it kind of went off in a few too many tangents."

“Loved it! I'm amazed by how seamlessly Reichs makes the transition from forensic jargon to snappy, funny dialogue—scientist to great storyteller. What's not to admire and envy?”

— Globe and Mail (Toronto)“Linda Emond’s crisp and dry vocal interpretation of Reichs’ Temperance Brennan, crime fiction’s second most popular forensic expert, is on target.”

— Booklist" An excellent story that keeps you reading all night. "
— Robin, 2/14/2014" A Temperance Brennan novel, starting with a contractor who discovers a hidden cellar in a house he is remodeling, filled with voodoo items and a human skull. A few days later a body of a boy is found by a river, also with satanic overtones, and another murder follows. Linking the murders and sorting through suspects fills the rest of the book. I did not like it as well as most of her other books. "
— Julie, 2/10/2014" Very similar to an episode of Bones, but I felt like it dragged on longer than necesssary. "
— Kiira, 2/5/2014" A darker Kathy Reichs but not as dark as Patricia Cornwell. Tempe (our hero) is going through a bad time in her life but I really felt for her. It's that good. "
— Tony, 2/4/2014" Another good one in the series, but not the best one. I had a hard time getting into the story for some reason. The plot seemed to drag on. In these kinds of books, I prefer a faster pace of action in the story. However, I am looking forward to the next one in the series. I recommend all of the books in this series. And I love the TV show Bones that is based on the Temperance Brennan series of books. "
— Christina, 1/30/2014" I read this because I love the TV show Bones. Not even close. The characters weren't as engaging as the TV ones. :) It was mediocre, but as I read it on vacation, at least it was easy to keep track of the storyline! "
— AnnaMarie, 1/24/2014" Always good reads, this one was no exception. "
— Jane, 1/21/2014" For some reason I couldn't get into this one as much as usual and kept forgetting character names. Kathy Reichs is still one of my favourite authors, though. "
— Wanda, 1/13/2014" I really enjoyed this book on CD. However, I found it so interesting that I want to read the book now! "
— Amy, 1/11/2014" Since I picked up this book this morning and have already finished it, I would say it was a decent read! I am engaged by Kathy Reichs' books and like the tv series that loosely accompanies it. "
— Athornton, 1/7/2014" Really good & fast read. Hard to put down!! Nice twist in the end. Can't wait to read more from same author!! "
