"The empire is stagnating under an unjust honor system where slavery and cruelty abounds. Mara of the house Acoma has endured so much heartache due to attacks from other houses who seek her destruction and in this book she finds herself cornered by the most powerful in the empire, the Great Ones of the assembly of magicians. Mara risks all to secure the lives of her children and sacrifices much to bring peace and fairness to her home world of Kelewan. The characters are exquisitely portrayed, Arakasi (Mara's spymaster- in particular) and Lujan (Mara's Strike Leader). I have read the Daughter of the Empire, Servant of the Empire and this book the Mistress of the Empire many times. These 3 books from the empire side of the Rift War Saga are thoroughly exciting to read."
