In this thrilling standalone novel from the internationally bestselling author of the Frieda Klein series, a woman’s frantic search for her missing daughter unveils a nefarious web of secrets and lies.
Nina Landry awakens on her fortieth birthday, anticipating a day filled with excitement. She, her new boyfriend, and her two children are taking a trip—leaving their home on Sandling Island, off the coast of England, for a dream vacation. As soon as her fifteen-year-old daughter, Charlie, returns from a sleepover, they can get ready to leave.
But Charlie doesn’t come home at the expected time. Nina can’t believe of all days, Charlie has chosen this day to be late. As minutes and then hours tick by, Nina’s annoyance soon changes to concern, and then to a chilling certainty that something terrible has happened.
The police insist there’s no reason to worry—yet. Teenagers are unreliable, impulsive. Nina always thought she and Charlie had a solid, trusting relationship, but seeking out Charlie’s friends for clues to her whereabouts makes her reconsider. How well does Nina know her daughter, really? How well can a parent ever know a child? And will everything Nina doesn’t know—about Charlie, her neighbors, even the friends and family closest to them—prove fatal…?

"OUTSTANDING!!! This is the first time I've read anything by the husband/wife team who form the pseudonym of Nicci French, and I must say that I was VERY pleasantly surprised. I started reading late last night and was finished within a 24-hour period, which is a rarity for me. I had the book clutched in my hands all day today, only taking two short breaks for lunch and dinner. I couldn't turn the pages fast enough, and didn't want to put it down until I'd reached the end. It was wonderfully written, perfectly paced, and suspenseful from start to finish. The fact that there are no chapters might normally bother me, but for this, it totally worked; the story is written in real-time, and to have broken it into sections would have detracted from the story by creating unnecessary pauses. Not everyone seems to have appreciated the ending, but I personally liked it. Now if only I had someone to discuss it with while it's fresh on my mind. :)"

“Lose yourself in this smart nail-biter of a tale.”
— People magazine“Nicci French…know[s] exactly how to maintain the tension…You live through every nail-biting minute.”
— The Guardian (London)“This engrossing read captures the importance of the often overlooked and underappreciated minutiae of everyday life.”
— Publishers Weekly (starred review)" This is the first book Ive read from this author (husband/wife team) and I loved it. Its a thriller and it kept me guessing until the very end! "
— Heather, 2/5/2014" Very hard to put down as I just needed to know what happened next! Excellent! "
— Emma, 2/2/2014" Summer is always when I completely immerse myself in mysteries and thrillers -- I have fairly low expectations beyond being entertained. This one surprised me. It was well-written, engaging, moving. All this, despite the fact it is a fairly conventional plot for the genre. It manages to make all the convenient coincidences believable, avoid all the annoying twists that drag things on and on, and a protagonist who isn't perfect but who I liked and who acted in ways I could believe, if not always understand. I highly recommend it ... "
— Stacysom, 2/1/2014" It always amazes me how an author can write about one day in the life of a person and make an entire book about it. French does this quite well and also captures a mother's anguish when she realizes her teenage daughter may be missing. I'd like to read some more by French (actually the husband/wife team of Sean French and Nicci Gerrard). "
— Clare, 1/18/2014" Impossible to put down, and there are no chapter divisions, which adds to the cannot-put-down feeling. Told in "real time" (as much as that is possible in a novel). The heroine in this book is extraordinary--and you don't have to be a mother to relate to how she goes about trying to find her daughter. "
— Jbowman, 1/18/2014" If you can - read it in one sitting as you won't want to put it down. A 'Real time' book. "
— Fiona, 1/7/2014" Read it until 3 am, couldn't stop 'till I was done. "
— Carrie, 12/30/2013" The most un-put-downable book I've read. The authors managed to create such a pace to the story of a mother trying to find her missing daughter - you could feel her panic and frustration as if it were your own. "
— Amanda, 12/17/2013" A fantastic thriller. I couldn't put it down. I agonised every moment of this mother's gripping search for her daughter. Will be reading more Nicci French! "
— LaDawn, 12/5/2013" Not a bad book but I've read better. "
— Anushka, 11/12/2013" great book could not stop reading once i started "
— Stacey, 11/3/2013" Best book I had EVER read! So tension building, quite a moderate read not to slow nor to fast- took me around 5 hours I was so in the story I must of been in it! Nicci French...amazing how they both write the stories in such suspense! "
— Abbie, 9/12/2013" I read this book in 2 days. It was really a page turner.....what happened and who did it????? "
— Sherry, 9/7/2013" Nicci French is a fantastic duo that create the most interesting thrillers. I always end up sitting on the edge of my chair when I read their books, and always look forward to their next one. "
— Jenn, 6/27/2013" A bit meandering to start but concludes with lots of action. A good quick read with always riveting subject matter-mother's search for her missing child. "
— Margot, 6/1/2013" Super generic mysetery. Predicatble. No Suspence. The only slightly interesting thing about this book is it is a English novel so the English references and culture are slightly cool to reference. "
— Holly, 9/1/2012" Well I enjoyed this book start to finish. Several twists and turns. A couple of red herrings. Police intransigence and parental desperation. However, a couple of untied threads and a conclusion that didn't provide closure, for me, anyway. Still, a worthwhile read I'm happy to recommend. "
— Tony, 1/12/2012" Tremendously suspenseful. Do not start late at night! "
— Ralph, 11/7/2011" Love Nicci French, but this is one of my least favorites. "
— Cindy, 10/19/2011" This got better as it went along. Certainly made you think about how you would react if you found out your child was missing. Would I have been that tenacious? It was the kind of book that stays with you for a while after you finish it. "
— Gina, 4/27/2011" Kept me riveted to the very end. A bit difficult to read the "English" words vs the American words. "
— Nancy, 3/31/2011" good i guess. But a lot of action! "
— Dreamer_Darker(loves, 2/4/2011" I used to live on the island where this is set. That really brought it to life. "
— Deb, 1/26/2011" Not as good as some of her later novels but nontheless the suspense is there and keeps you guessing. Great writing, setting the scene to make the tale more atmospheric and chilling. "
— Lisa, 1/18/2011" great book could not stop reading once i started "
— Stacey, 1/12/2011" I liked how this book shows what ordinary people are capable of doing under extrodinary conditions if they care enough "
— Sarah, 12/18/2010" I read this book in 2 days. It was really a page turner.....what happened and who did it????? "
— Sherry, 7/28/2010" I loved the book.. Read it in hardback.. Read it in 2 days.. Very good at the end and it is a thriller.. Something you never expected... "
— Kathy, 7/9/2010" Tremendously suspenseful. Do not start late at night! "
