In this authorized edition from the Queen of Mystery, a Halloween Party turns deadly, and it falls to Hercule Poirot to unmask a murderer.

At a Halloween party, Joyce—a hostile thirteen-year-old—boasts that she once witnessed a murder. When no one believes her, she storms off home. But within hours her body is found, still in the house, drowned in an apple-bobbing tub.

That night, Hercule Poirot is called in to find the `evil presence'. But first he must establish whether he is looking for a murderer or a double-murderer...

"When a thirteen year old girl is murdered at a Halloween party, mystery writer, Ariadne Oliver calls on her old friend Hercule Poirot to help solve the crime. Not much to do with Halloween but a fast and interesting mystery that kept me guessing till the end."

" Another Christie novel that starts out promisingly only to have a really rubbish ending. Kind of struggled to get through this one - there's definitely better Poirot novels out there so I would suggest reading those instead of this one. It's one saving grace is that the book is much better than the recent TV adaptation. "

" My grandma was a big Agatha Christie fan so I picked one of her books up at random in Barnes & Noble and decided to give it a shot. It was a good story, but Christie was the Stephen King of her day. Good story, but very detailed and wordy. The book could have been cut down to 100 pages. But, I did enjoy the story since it was a mystery. "

" Spence, Poirot, and Mrs. Oliver together again! I love these 3 together but I guessed the murderer immediately. I hate when I figure it out at the beginning. I don't enjoy the story as much. "

" This was quite intruiging. I really liked the characters and I liked the fact that Agatha Christie lets her characters speak for themselves, so you get an idea of the character from what they say and how they say it rather than because she's told you what they are like. Some of their comments were very similar though which was a bit odd, but overall this was an enjoyable book to read and has made me think about dusting off my other Christies and doing a spot of re-reading. " I know. Wrong time of year. But I'm like that, inappropriate and all, my timing all out of whack, humming Christmas carols in July. Irritating, I'm told. And so it should be no surprise that I liked this book and give it 2.5* when most of Canada and the U.S. are in the middle of a sweltering heatwave. While this isn't Christie's best book, I find I need one of her books now and then, like an old friend ( Wodehouse is in that category as well). There should be a separate rating system for authors like Christie - their books don't have to be amazing to be satisfying, they just have to be characteristic. Those who like Agatha Christie will appreciate this book, those who have never read her before might want to start off with a different one - "And Then There Were None", maybe. "

" Another semi-guilty pleasure set of books. Quick reads, connection to a family member I loved much and miss quite a lot... and I do like Christie's characters. The "answer" is usually pretty easy to figure out long before you get to the end, but I still find them fun. "

" Not Christie's best, with a little too much talk and not enough clues. The solution is satisfying--and heartbreaking--enough, and Christie does a fairly decent examination of "modern" crime, but this is a denser, more serious tale than the title suggests. "

" Not my favorite of Agatha Christie, the story seemed contrived and repetitive, without any true engagement with the characters or development of the plot. The action resided in the past, and left the present investigation dry. "
