New York Times bestselling author C. J. Box delivers a novel starring Joe Pickett’s sidekick, fan-favorite Nate Romanowski.

Joe Pickett never wanted to know about it, but Nate Romanowski always knew trouble was coming out of his past. Now it’s here, and it may not only be the battle of his own life—but of Joe’s.

In 1995, Nate was in a secret Special Forces unit abroad when a colleague did something terrible. Now high up in the government, the man is determined to eliminate anyone who knows about it, and Nate knows exactly how he’ll do it—by striking at Nate’s friends to draw him out. The entire Pickett family will be a target, and the only way to fight back is outside the law. Nate knows he can do it, but he isn’t sure about his straight-arrow friend—and all their lives could depend on it.

  • “The struggle between loyalty and law has always been at the heart of this series…and it’s especially impressive in this superior entry.”

    Publishers Weekly

    Library Journal

" Joe Picket and family are old friends. In previous books, Nate has been shadowed with some kind of past, but this brings it all out. Gripping, as usual from Box. Really enjoyed the falconry images and facts as well. "

" n ot my favorite read by this author...was lengthy for this particular storyline and a bit boring. That's what took me so long to rad it. There wasn't enough suspense; too many "bird" and "family" details... "

" Nate comes to the fore front. Good story with predictable twists. Left a couple questions open foe the next installment. not much about the elements as this story is characture driven. "

  • 5 out of 55 out of 55 out of 55 out of 55 out of 5 Melinda Howard | 1/2/2014

" I think his writing is a lot like Nevada Barrs style. The characters are so real and you feel that you are there living the mystery yourself. "

" Another thrilling read by C.J. Box. While I prefer stories centered on Joe Pickett and his family, this one was focused on Joe's mysterious friend Nate and his mysterious background. However, the suspense was so intense (who's going to die next?) that I couldn't put the book down. "

" I had a difficult time getting started with this author, however this is the second novel I have read and I am now looking forward to reading more. I gave this novel 4 stars because I thought it dragged a bit in places, but when the action picked up, it did so with a vengeance. "

" Another Joe Pickett but one of the best. Actually the story is all about Nate Romanowski and is a tense thriller thoughout. Lots of bad and BAD guys and lots of people getting killed. It kept me up late at night, made me dream the book, and got me up early to finish! "
