Alissa doesn’t believe in magic. Her father’s stories about the Hold, a legendary fortress where human Keepers learn magic from the enigmatic Masters, are just that—stories. But her mother insists Alissa has inherited her father’s magical ability, so she must go to the Hold to be trained. On her way, she crosses paths with Strell, a wandering musician from the plains. Though Alissa is not sure she can trust a plainsman, Strell has something Alissa needs—one of her father’s old maps. Traveling together, they can reach the Hold before the snow sets in. But they don’t know that the Hold is nearly empty. The Keeper Bailic has sent the Masters on a fool’s errand and systematically killed the other Keepers in his search for the First Truth, a book of magic that will give him ultimate power. And he believes that Alissa and Strell hold the secret of the book’s hiding place.

"This series kept me inthralled.I don't wish to give anything away but I liked the fact the in certain aspects I could guess s what would happen next then she would blind side me later in the book.I'm also a fan when it comes to good verses evil and the good doesn't always win. ( not that I'm saying the good guys don't triumph) but it's a lot like life u can lose battle but win the war.that is seen through out the series. The good guys r human thus they can be over powered or forced by the bad gusto do his will.that forces their charters to grow change and evolve much to how life makes us grow and change ourselves. However this series was rather hard for me to find. I had to go to used book shops until I downed all of them plus the two decoy princess books.I wok strongly recommend this series as a must read. It's a change of pace from other books if your want something different to read."

“Dawn Cook’s First Truth is a fun book, sure to appeal to fans (like me) of Tamora Pierce or Robin McKinley. With characters to cheer for, vicious villains, and attack birds, First Truth had everything I need in a good read. I look forward to Alissa’s next adventure.”
— Patricia Briggs, bestselling author“In her beguiling debut, Cook has woven together magical threads…a tale of courage and quest…a world rich with vivid detail…and characters, whether valiant or villainous, impossible to forget.”
— Deborah Chester“A beautifully told, simple story that looks unblinkingly at how prejudice unnecessarily reinforces misconceptions, misunderstandings, and hatred.”
— Booklist“A refreshing, humorous take on the coming-of-age quest. The plot tightly builds empathy for the characters even as it makes fun of their foibles.”
— RT Book Reviews" I really liked the Truth series by Dawn Cook. "
— Alexandra, 2/8/2014" I listened to an audio version of this book in the car and think it might have been better if read. It was a little hard to follow some of the folklore in the car. However, it was an interesting story and I will continue with the next book. "
— Connie, 2/3/2014" This one felt like an interesting beginning to a series, rather than a book of its own. But the series has potential to be quite good, so I am going to continue with it. "
— Kate, 2/2/2014" The quirks I loved about Dawn Cook/Kim Harrison's writing in the Hollows are definitely seen in this series. Love it! "
— Kate, 1/25/2014" Don't be fooled by the cover art, even more misleading on the second printing than the first. This is a delightful and engrossing story in a new and fascinating world. The characters are believable and engaging and the plot--and plotting! do not disappoint. "
— Erin, 1/22/2014" This is a really fun series... I wouldn't expect anything less from Kim Harrison. "
— ^_^, 12/31/2013" First book in a series with many enjoyable aspects. "
— Kat, 12/30/2013" really average "
— Carla, 12/30/2013" Want. Next. Book. NAOW. PLZ. "
— Jesi, 8/6/2013" I loved this book! I loved the world she set up and enjoyed the fun conflict between the characters. The heroine reminds me of my spunky heroines and I thoroughly enjoyed it. "
— Terry, 6/24/2013" I really enjoyed this authors style of writing. Very detailed, but keeps your interest. She doesn't describe the room to the smallest detail, however she will describe it while the characters walk around it/touch it/sense it. I read every word on every page. "
— Becky, 3/10/2013" Fun. As noted, read out loud to the grandkids. They liked it and I enjoyed reading it to them. "
— Rick, 1/16/2013" I really enjoyed this! Great characters, interesting story, and a subtle bit of romance...so glad I already have books 2 and 3! :) "
— Tracy, 11/23/2012" soo langweilig, dass ich es nicht zu Ende lesen konnte. "
— Clara, 10/11/2012" It's a different approach to magic and that is very refreshing to me, as I'm used to "normal" wizard kind of stuff. At times, there is romance that can seem frustrating, but it plays a purpose. "
— Christopher, 6/26/2012" Sweetly written, but to me both storyline and characters seem a little childish. Did i pick a children's book accidentially? I'm reading the sequels though. "
— Clarity, 5/16/2011" I wanted to check out this series as I really like this authors other books under a different name. In the end this book couldn't hold my attention, so it ended up not being for me. "
— Darcy, 4/6/2011" This is a great book. For my birthday I was given teh first three books of this series and I can't stop thinking about them. I read this in a day, it was that great. This is a fantastic read, sure to entertain all ages. "
— Trinity, 2/7/2011" I liked the story but it got stretched too long and I lost my interest in this series. "
— Payal, 1/22/2011" Had to go buy these after I finished the series because I new this is a series I would read again and again. It was just fun and action packed and the love story was great! "
— Melissa, 1/15/2011" This one felt like an interesting beginning to a series, rather than a book of its own. But the series has potential to be quite good, so I am going to continue with it. "
— Kate, 12/16/2010" I wrote a review for this before, but I guess it didn't take. The world is good foundation, but what makes this story come alive are the two main characters. I look forward to more of their escapades in the rest of the series. "
— Patrice, 12/14/2010" First Truth is a greaet start to a promising series, the only bad thing is that it ends in such a way that you HAVE to read the second book immediately. "
— Anne, 12/12/2010
