Two boys and an old man survive a harrowing waterfall accident to find themselves stranded in the remote MacKenzie mountains of northern Canada. Fifteen-year olds Gabe and Raymond have the same birthday, but come from vastly different cultures. Gabe was raised by his grandparents in the Texas hill country, and Raymond is from a native village in the Northwest Territories. The old man is Johnny Raven, Raymond's great uncle. Luckily for the boys, he's a traditional Dihnay Indian who knows the old ways of winter survival. With winter fast approaching, and food running out, they must all work together to keep from becoming trapped in the howling wilds. Whether the group is eating porcupine or shooting the icy rapids, Johnny Heller's voice draws maximum excitement. "Gabe a fifteen year old boy (Turns sixteen laster in book,) and Raymond (Also turns sixteen later in book,) are two boys that are have very different back grounds. Gabe is originally from Texas, and Raymond has a native american back ground. They are both flying to Canada for two different reasons. There is only four people in the plane Raymond, Gabe, Johnny (Raymond's great uncle) and the pilot. The plane's engine stops, and they land in Virginia Falls. The pilot dies, and the three others must learn to live on their own until they are rescued... if they are rescued."

" The plot line of this story is almost exactly like Farley Mowat's "Lost in the Barrens" but a little more "modern" in terms of language and writing style. A little more dumbed down, perhaps? I prefer Mowat. All the same, a very fun book to read and it doesn't surprise me that Joel (9yob) loved it. "

About Will Hobbs
Will Hobbs is the author of many outdoor adventure novels for upper elementary, middle school, and young adult readers, as well as a few picture book stories. Several of his novels have been named Best Books for Young Adults by the American Library Association, and Ghost Canoe, his first mystery, won the Edgar Allan Poe Award for Best Young Adult Mystery. The ALA’s list of the 100 Best Young Adult Books of the Twentieth Century includes two of Will’s titles: Far North and Downriver. A graduate of Stanford University and a former reading and language arts teacher, he lives with his wife in Durango, Colorado.
