Fifteen-year-old Jessie is angry with her father for sending her on an outdoor survival program for troubled teens. Confused about her life back home and unsure of herself, she is drawn to the powerful personality of a teammate, the charismatic Troy. At their first opportunity to rebel, she and her six companions "borrow" their instructor's gear and attempt the dangerous Colorado River through the Grand Canyon on their own. With no maps or guides, they face roaring rapids, drenching rain, injury, and conflict among themselves. The further they travel, the more they realize that the whitewater may be the least of their problems. There's more to Troy, their self-imposed leader, than any of them could have predicted. Chosen by the American Library Association as one of the one hundred Best of the Best Young Adult Books of the past 25 years, Downriver will captivate young readers with its heady dose of excitement, entertainment, and suspense.

"As an x-hoods in the wood counselor and one who worked in the Grand Canyon I found this story very fun. I teamed up with an English teacher and we taught this book together. Lots of fun and a good lead in to Geology."
— Keith (4 out of 5 stars)
“Exquisitely plotted, with nail-biting suspense and excitement.”
— School Library Journal" Downriver was a pretty good book to read. I would recommend it to young adults, and people who are interested in the thrill of rafting or nature. This book was definately a page turner with its thrilling white water ride. Although, it is not my style of book to read, I would recommend it to anyone who fits the category I previously stated above. "
— Ziggy, 1/28/2014" so good!!!! reading in class omg cant wait to read more!!!:) "
— Madison, 1/15/2014" I was fairly interested and excited to read this. However, all in all, this wasn't that great of a read. It was fun to escape to white rapids and raging rivers, but I didn't connect very much to the characters, story, and "morals." The ending was sugar-coated chocolate dipped in a vat of molasses with giant sugar cubes dumped on top. I don't really know what I wanted the end to be, but I felt it was far too neatly tied up and sickeningly sweet. But, at the same time, I did want a happy ending, maybe just not so "perfect." "
— Mary, 12/29/2013" okay, the start of this book was annoying for me simply because the characters are all punk teenagers- but I love how it ends and want to read the sequel. Great adventure YA quick read. "
— Bekah, 12/9/2013" This book would be good for the middle school grades. It is a good lesson about what can happen when someone doesn't listen to their intuition and lets a charming personality overrule common sense. "
— Kathy, 12/2/2013" This is a good, quick read book and a good book for kids who hate reading. However, the ending is disappointing and my students wished that it had ended differently. "
— Andria, 11/18/2013" Downriver has lots of action and great descriptions of the scenery of the Grand Canyon. I did find the ending to be a bit sappy, though. "
— Malinda, 11/13/2013" Good quick read for an adult. I was teaching this to a group of seventh graders. The does kinda gloss over the climaxes, but still had me hooked. "
— Ruth, 11/6/2013" I had to read this book for a school project, so I kind of put it off. But once I got through the beginning I loved it!!! "
— Hannah, 10/30/2013" Read to my sophomore English class. They really seemed to like it!!! "
— Katie, 10/27/2013" I haven't got to far into it yet so I don't know if I will like it or not :-) "
