Fifteen-year-old Allison Shaw may not be beautiful, but she doesn’t really care. She is happier hanging with her friends and playing sports than admiring herself in a mirror. But when her mother, Risa, marries the premier plastic surgeon Conrad Dunn, he moves them from Santa Monica to his enormous home in exclusive Bel Air.
Everywhere Allison and her mother look beautiful people have benefited from Conrad’s skillful knife. With her new friends’ encouragement, Allison and her mother reluctantly agree to her sweet-sixteen gift from Conrad: breast implants.
Risa begins to realize Conrad’s obsession with his deceased wife. She discovers not only his fixation with the beautiful dead Margot, but other dark, murky secrets begin to surface, as well, pointing to a more sinister agenda. What else does he have in mind for her daughter? Is it too late to save Allison from the scalpel of her ever so charming husband?

"I enjoyed this book, it was a page turner for me. I thought it was fairly obvious where the story was going but that didn't stop me from flipping those pages. This was my first John Saul novel and I'll be reading more for sure! "

" What an awesome book! "
— Amanda, 5/13/2011" Probably the worst Saul book I have read, but it was at least good enough to finish. "
— Trevor, 3/10/2011" Good plot, Saul is a good storyteller. It's hard to put down. "
— Judy, 2/24/2011" Not my favorite Saul book. It was predictable and kind of slow. "
— Tbanj, 1/21/2011" Could not get through this. Wealthy, superficial lives are not ingredients for the type of good horror I enjoy.. "
— Sylvia, 1/20/2011" It was annoying. I was irritated by how completely off the synopsis on the back cover is. Whoever wrote it obviously didn't read the book. Also annoyed by loads of grammatical errors.

Very predictable plot. No twists, whatsoever.
Not nearly dark enough. Just a small amount of gore. "
— Tricia, 12/31/2010" A great John Saul read. "
— Beth, 12/10/2010" library. audio book.

So-so story. I was annoyed with the narration. If you can't 'do' voices, don't. The women characters all talked in the soprano range; the men in the bass range. And the teens all talked baby talk. Very distracting. "
— Maicie, 10/19/2010" So many twists and turns. This is a page turner nd you will not be able to put it down. This is simply amazing. I love this book. It will absolutely scare you to the bone. Amazing. "
— Mikaila, 10/12/2010" Verry good book I really liked it =) "
— Sarah, 10/3/2010" I haven't read John Saul in a while. I think he did a better job of developing characters than in the past. Definitely a "good read". "
— Phil, 7/13/2010" This was a pretty good, creepy book. That's what I have come to expect from John Saul. The plot was very predictable, so that took away some of the suspense. It was a quick read. Definitely not Saul at his creepy best, though. "
— Tina, 7/11/2010" My first look at John Saul came from this book. I loved it! He is now one of my top favorites. I'll read him every time he writes a new book. Pick yourself up a copy; you won't be sorry. "
