They call it the Academy. A secluded, cliff-top mansion overlooking the rugged Pacific coast. A school for children gifted -- or cursed -- with extraordinary minds. Children soon to come under the influence of an intelligence even more brilliant than their own -- and unspeakably evil.
For within this mind a dark plan is taking form. A plan so horrifying, no one will believe it. No one but the children. And for them it is already too late. Too late, unless one young student can resist the seductive invitation that will lead... into the Shadows.

"The book that brought me back to reading! Shadows is a good book where each character is molded with indivisuality. The story was both thrilling and detailed which kept me turning the pages. I recommend this book to people who enjoy horror with a little sci-fi twist. "
— Anthony (4 out of 5 stars)
" Like most of John Saul's books, this is a fast read - I managed to do it in under 4 hours. Unfortunately, it seems as though that's about all the time it took to actually write the book as well. With very little character development and a plot that goes from "point A" to "point B" with a single twist visible a mile away, this one's better than most, but not as good as it could be. "
— Crystal, 2/17/2014" So so until the last fourth of the book where it really kept my attention. There were a few loose ends that weren't tied and I thought the final ending was a little silly but all in all a pretty good read. "
— Karen, 2/14/2014" If this is the book I'm thinking of, the title completely does nothing to describe this plot. Genius kids being taken into a fake genius school which is really a secret operation trying to remove their brains. "
— Kate, 2/5/2014" Another fast read from Saul. Very well written with fantastic twists and turns. A real page-turner! "
— Susan, 2/5/2014" I had a hard time getting all the way through because this book is so darn creepy and down-right scary! Sooo good though! "
— Shawn, 1/20/2014" An interesting read about a school for genius children, the mad scientist who runs it and his experiments with artificial intelligence. "
— TeraD, 1/5/2014" gripping thriller involving technology and gifted children. "
— Heather, 1/5/2014" i thought this book was very good. it kept me intrigues, about what would happen next. "
— Rachel, 1/5/2014" freaking awesome book. "
— Angelica, 12/20/2013" The book that brought me back to reading! Shadows is a good book where each character is molded with indivisuality. The story was both thrilling and detailed which kept me turning the pages. I recommend this book to people who enjoy horror with a little sci-fi twist. "
— Anthony, 12/12/2013" As a child who went to a special school for gifted children, this scared the ever living hell out of me. "
— April, 11/19/2013" The main problem with techno-thrillers, or at least stories that use computer technology as the crux of its plot, is that the technology is outdated within hours. The idea of this plot is certainly creepy enough, but it's also been used several times in 1950's B-movies. "
— Bonnie, 9/18/2013" Just as good as any John Saul book. I don't know why I took as long a break as I did. The perfect read for when you just want entertainment. "
— Katie, 9/2/2013" Best by far. "
— Antuza, 8/24/2013" In the beginning it took me a little while to get into this book but once I did I was completely hooked on it. "
— Haylie, 7/5/2013" It was kind of scary with lots of death but the ideas being discussed and explored are very interesting. "
— Liz, 2/3/2013" A couple of disturbing sections -- but all in all a pretty good book. "
— Wind, 1/7/2013" I really, really enjoyed this book. Even though the book gave the key players away almost immediately it did a wonderful job of setting up and keeping the tension and suspense throughout the book. You were always kept wondering what exactly was going on. "
— Tina, 12/30/2012" Not John Saul's best, but decent John Saul is still better than most horror. "
— Chris, 11/10/2012" if I had to pick 1 book that is my all time favorite it would be this 1 "
— Marian, 7/18/2012" Not sure I haven't read this many years ago but still really creepy and good. But what happened to the teacher, lol? "
— Vicky, 5/2/2012" from the parental point of view: the storyline was terrifying. "
— Honeylieg, 2/9/2012" Loved this book. In my opinion its the best book he has written. "
— Corinne, 1/10/2012" The ending is a hit or miss. For me, what began as a satisfying read got ruined by the last few dozen pages. I felt that it was just attached to close most of the plot holes. "
— Julius, 11/28/2011" This was my first John Saul book and it got me hooked. It was also my favorite until Manhattan Hunt Club came out. He has such a talent for writing some creepy tales. "
— Amanda, 9/25/2011" Very hard to read as a mother. I identified too much with the parents and ask horrified by the concept. But I guess that's the point isn't it. "
— Nicole, 9/24/2011" This was a really short but interesting novel. It didn't quite end the way that I thought it would but that is not a bad thing. John Saul had me wondering and speculating until the end. An excellent story. "

— Karen, 11/18/2009" An enjoyable book. Better than average for sure, though just barely. "
— Jesse, 11/13/2009" Really wanted to like this book but I couldn't get into it. "
— J.M., 7/17/2009" A quick and easy read and interesting. Not my favorite book, but I also don't regret reading it. Supposed to be a horror, but more Sci-Fi than horror. I don't know, if you're bored and need to something to read pick this one up, but don't go out of your way to read it. "
— Dave, 5/20/2009" Great book...lots of suspense and a fast read..i'd read it again "
