From the blood of the past, evil rises to seek undying vengeance... Prairie Bend.
Brilliant summers amid golden fields. Killing winters of razorlike cold. A peaceful, neighborly village, darkened by legends of death? Who is Nathaniel? For a hundred years, the people of Prairie Bend have whispered the name in wonder and fear. Some say he is simply a folk tale - a legend created to frighten children on cold winter nights. Some swear he is a terrifying spirit returned to avenge the past. And soon...very soon...some will come to believe that Nathaniel lives still - darkly, horrifyingly real. Nathaniel.
For young Michael Hall, newly arrived in isolated Prairie Bend after having lost his father to a sudden tragic accident, Nathaniel is the voice that calls him across the prairie night...the voice that draws him into the shadowy depths of the old, crumbling barn where he has been forbidden to go...the voice - chanting, compelling - he will follow faithfully beyond the edge of terror...Nathaniel.

"This is the fourth book of Saul's that I have read; I'm currently on a John Saul binge, and while I loved it and it was a lot of fun, I expected a little more. I could have seen the ending going in some different directions that would have been more unpredictable and more exciting. But with that being said, it was still a fun enough book to get a 4 star rating from me. If you're looking for a quick, easy read that will give you a few scares, this book probably won't disappoint you. I'm beginning to think that that's what you can always expect from John Saul."
— Jeff (4 out of 5 stars)

— Anuj, 2/5/2014" I have had books of his on my shelf for a while and never got around to them. I am interested in checking out more after reading this one. It had an old fashion creepy vibe to it. "
— Kim, 2/1/2014" This was the second book i ever read. I was really young when i did. I took it from my mother's books and it scared me. Ever since i read this i've been into reading ghost stories. I read it again last year to see if it had the same effects and it still made the hair at the back of my neck stand up. "
— Robin, 1/20/2014" I could not put this book down once I started reading it. Fantastic writer, will b reading more by this author "
— Danielle, 1/16/2014" I have been a John Saul fan forever. I have always enjoyed his style of writing. He knows how to place you where he wants you to be. It has been a few years since I've read something by him and when I finished I thought "Ooooo Mr. Saul you got me good" I was not expecting the ending even thoughI should have known better that it wasn't quite over. It was nice stepping back into his world and I enjoyed every moment of it. "
— Athena, 1/9/2014" Great read, keeps you very interested, reminds me of Stephen King writing, the end was a little confusing. All in all very good book. "
— Malloryk0422, 1/4/2014" This one was good in that it had an ambiguous ending... much better than recent ones. "
— Lisa, 12/27/2013" This was the second book by John Saul I read and it's one of my favorites. The atmosphere is so spooky and Amos Hall... brrr "
— Susan, 12/22/2013" This book started off with so much potential, but then just petered out midway through. I got the feeling that John Saul never had any idea where he was going with the book, then got bored with it, so hastily ended it...a shame. "
— Dan, 11/13/2013" this is the first book I read by this author as a teen, and it got me hooked! I've since read every book he's ever written. "
— Teresa, 11/6/2013" I love John Saul, and this has got to be my absolute favorite book of his! It has lots of twists and turns that keep you guessing until the very end when the surprise ending leaves you speechless! "
— Kayla, 11/3/2013" Was really entertaining, but the last page really threw me off. I'm still not sure about the ending. "
— J.P., 10/27/2013" Love all of John Saul's books. He focuses on teenagers, at least all the books of his that I've read were that way. I empathized with his lead characters because I always feel like an outsider, which his characters always wind up being. Saul mixes it all up with some Sci-fi to boot. "
— Kyle, 10/20/2013" This one that will keep you up nights. One my favorite authors for horror. From the beginning John Saul hooks you in & the story has a surprise twist at the end. The characters are well developed & Saul describes everything in vivid detail which pulls you into the story. "
— Mitzi, 10/16/2013" It wasn't a bad book but the ending could have been better "

— Michelle, 10/4/2013" havent read this in about 20 years, have no idea if its worth revisiting, and i read it way before i was old enough but it damn if it didnt scare me for years. "
— Walter, 7/9/2013" I think it was really good..but not John Sauls best work..to many questions were left unanswered. "
— Lacy, 5/29/2013" Circular plot "
— Danielle, 2/1/2013" I didn't much care for this book.. I thought the story was going well until the end.. The last hundred pages of the book, I thought the story got lost (or I got lost).. It ruined the whole story for me, thus I gave it two stars.. Saul has written much better.. "
— Steve, 10/15/2012" too far fetched for me "
— Betsy, 9/24/2012" This was the first John Saul book i ever read...and I've read a lot of them! (I went through a John Saul phase a few years ago). It is defintely creepy and weird. A good horror novel! "
— Amy, 8/12/2012" he writes a good yarn and pulls the rug out by killing people you don't expect him to "
— Sandyboy, 5/16/2012" I read this creepy little gem back in 2005. I forgot to add it until I recently started listening to another John Saul book. He is a little too cryptic and long winded. He also seems to mess with kids in a creepy, creey way. He is a master in his own right. "
— jD, 4/24/2012" Creepy!!! The ending left me wanting more! "
— Cindy, 2/6/2012" Not bad. I was digging it up until the end and then I was disappointed. I figured the ending would be better and not such a let down. I'll still give his other books a try. "
— Kristy, 1/2/2012" Incredibly disturbing. It gave me nightmares. And I love scary, creepy, eerie, disturbing books. "

— Kristy, 12/20/2010" he writes a good yarn and pulls the rug out by killing people you don't expect him to "
— Sandyboy, 12/10/2010" I was hoping for more super-natural & more horror. Nevertheless, the book did not disappoint. Mystery, family secrets. What I thought was, was not. The ending was also a surprise. I will pick up another of his books. "
— Sylvia, 9/28/2010" havent read this in about 20 years, have no idea if its worth revisiting, and i read it way before i was old enough but it damn if it didnt scare me for years. "
