Publisher Description

A Mischievous Charade . . .

Harriet, Duchess of Berrow, is tired of her title and the responsibilities that come along with it. Enough with proper tea parties and elegant balls; what Harriet really wants is to attend an outrageous soiree where she can unleash her wildest whims and desires. But to attend such an event—especially if the event in question is Lord Justinian Strange's rollicking fete, filled with noble rogues and rotters, risqué ladies and illicit lovers—would be certain scandal. That's why she must disguise herself . . .

Looking forward to a night of uninhibited pleasure, Lord Strange is shocked to discover that beneath the clothes of a no-good rake is the most beautiful woman in the room. Why is a woman like her risking her reputation at his notorious affair? And can he possibly entice her to stay . . . forever?

"Liked this one the most so far, which was surprising considering that I found Harriet to be the dullest of the duchesses. Actually, I really loved the pairing in this one. The secondary characters were great as always. Could've done without the miscommunication at the end."

— Giedre (4 out of 5 stars)

" Eloisa has a different writing style that I've not seen before in romance novels. I like it, it's fresh; and so was the idea behind the book. Refreshing story. "

" This is my favorite Eloisa James yet, though, yes, it's probably because of the cross-dressing. I think James is actually at her best when she strays away from the conventional ton--like here, and in A Kiss at Midnight. "

" Harriet accompanied Isidore to Lord Strange's residence on which Isidore had the gullibility to create a scandal in ensuring her husband returns to her. Harriet wanted a touch of adventure, hence she dressed as a man, just to explore being a male. The starting point was interesting, but then, it went downhill went Lord Strange's discovered Harriet's identity. Hence a 3 rating or a 2.5 "

" I liked this book. I really enjoyed the hero. He was amazing. Wasn't sure about the ending-fight. It seemed a bit contrived, but whatcanyado? Not a bad read. Plus, Eloisa did a good job of not making this one so full of other people's stories, which made it less distracting. "

" This was not my favorite of the Desperate Duchess series, mostly because I hard time with the main conflict that separates the hero and heroine as it seems so ridiculous. That being said there was a lot of fun banter and scenarios leading up to the inevitable admission of love between the two characters as the main character, the Duchess of Berrow, has decided to spend her time at a visit to a country house with a scandalous reputation, disguised as a man. She enjoys the freedom this disguise has brought her after the years of boring polite society as a widowed duchess, and the hero Simon is frustrated and confused as he becomes increasingly drawn the young 'man.' It has a fun sort of 12th Night feel to it, and while the 'why we can't be together' conflict takes far too long to resolve itself, the overall book was still quite fun. "

" There was something promising with the cross-dressing plot of this novel, but like its predecessor (An Affair Before Christmas), it failed to really interest me. I keep fond memories of Harriet and her Lord Strange, but the novel doesn't seem to do them justice. "
