" Ellen Hopkins writes about real life; the stuff that we don't always want to face. Her books show us the possiblity of hope but they also show despair and struggle. Because so much of our literature for teens is fantasy, adventure, etc. and not brimming with connections to our real world, I do feel that sometimes reading falls short of presenting any pertinent message on real life issues. Hopkins doesn't shy away from these and she does it without worrying about having to come clean at the end with a happy conclusion. Good for her. "
