Black Beauty, the friendly, patient stallion with a white blaze upon his forehead, is one of the most familiar figures in children's literature. After the first lively carefree years in the fields, Black Beauty learns to accept the saddle and bridle and the rule of her masters. But a succession of misfortunes shows that the life of a horse can be harsh and painful. This touching portrait, full of drama and sadness, is as moving now as when it was first written in 1877. " Black Beauty, tells the life of a horse from his perspective. He tells you about his travels, different homes, and owners, as well as other horses he meets. When I first read this book in probably middle school, I loved it, but I cried and cried. This is most definitely for older readers, because of some of the emotional content. There are so many emotions going on, from when he is in a good home with nice owners, to when he is beaten and hurt, although it is a classic, it is definitely for more mature readers. I think students could have fun reading it on their own, but I think it would also be fun to read aloud as a class. I like that this book is written from the point of view of Black Beauty, and I also really love the ending (won't give it away.) I will say I thought it was very relieving. "

" Horse propaganda. Still, a feel good book that's thankfully more about men than animals, and the evils of ignorance, greed, laziness, and cruelty. "

About the Author
Author Anna Sewell

Anna Sewell (1820–1878) was born in England. A knee injury at fourteen left her disabled, and her dependence on horse-drawn transportation fostered her respect of horses. Although Black Beauty is considered a children’s classic, she originally wrote it for those who worked with horses, “to induce kindness, sympathy, and an understanding treatment of horses.”
