"This is one of the most beautifully illustrated books I have ever been fortunate enough to own. I am already a big fan of this heartwarming story but the illustrations in this book is simply gorgeous. Quite possibly one of my favorite books in my collection!"

" This is actually the first time I have read a non-disney version of The Little Mermaid. I have to say it was just gruesome enough and I really enjoyed it. I enjoyed the illustrations. "
— Michelle, 2/19/2014" I never knew the real, classic ending to this! Disney makes it so pretty, and so happy. Not Hans. Still a magical story though and I think the ending gives it the final push to making it so memorable. "
— Olivia, 2/4/2014" This is definitely not Disney; an hour to read out loud with wonderful details about life under water. Good for 6+ age group. "
— Mary, 2/2/2014" I loved this Disney classic as a child! It's a great book, girls will especially love it! "
— Sharmin, 1/29/2014" This was my favourite book as a kid. Now I read it to my daughter and she loves it too. It's so weird because the ending is so tragic yet I couldn't get enough... "
— Jacqui, 1/20/2014" I give it a 5 for originality. It was nothing like the movie, but it was a Haunting little fairy-tale that can be a little scary for any child under the ages of 7 maybe. I still loved it though. "
— Megan, 1/5/2014" What can I say? It was a fairytale and I enjoyed it. It is quite different from the Disney version and there is no happily ever after. "
— LÄ«ga, 12/31/2013" I think I'm going to stick with the happy Disney Movie, rather than this book... Even though it can definitely be argued that it is not an unhappy ending. "
— Rhin, 11/22/2013" This version is completely different from the Disney story. It's really tragic, but very well written. "
— Alyssa, 11/20/2013" Tragic, sad, awfully beautiful tale. Hans Christian Andresen - a Childrens Author? Noo! Loved it :) "
— Ãɑηηɑ, 10/8/2013" This story broke my heart and was uplifting at the same time. I find it hard to believe that it was written for children, but sometimes children can deal with more than people give them credit for. "
— Maryfin, 9/30/2013" This was NOTHING like the Disney version. Much better! "
— Emma, 8/15/2013" I never realized how true to the actual story Disney was. Obviously there was no flounder or Sebastian, but the core ideas of the story (except the ending) carried through into the movie. "
— Nicole, 7/13/2013" I love this original story of the Little Mermaid, although I love the disney version I think I love this even more. "
— Sarah, 6/17/2013" Forget Disney. This is a surprisingly deep story... everyone who's ever seen the moveie should read this version! "
— Ta, 6/12/2013" What a wonderful story. It's a shame she doesn't get a Disney fairy tail ending, but I think that's part of the original story's charm. "
— Jessi, 6/9/2013" I think I got the one with the sugar-coated ending. "
— Persnip, 2/6/2013" One of the favorite fairy tales of my childhood. "
— Ira, 1/18/2013" After having seen the movie, I thought I was going to die after I read the actual book. "
— John, 12/4/2012" I've always loved the little mermaid and I read this when I was learning how to swim. How I wished that I was like the mermaid, that I could find my prince. "
— Tasneem, 11/19/2012Hans Christian Andersen (1805–1875) was born in Odense, Denmark, the son of a poor shoemaker and a washerwoman. As a young teenager, he became quite well known in Odense as a reciter of drama and as a singer. When he was fourteen, he set off for the capital, Copenhagen, determined to become a national success on the stage. He failed miserably, but made some influential friends in the capital who got him into school to remedy his lack of proper education. In 1829 his first book was published. After that, books came out at regular intervals. His stories began to be translated into English as early as 1846. Since then, numerous editions, and more recently Hollywood songs and Disney cartoons, have helped to ensure the continuing popularity of the stories in the English-speaking world.
