Publisher Description

The great modern classic and prelude to The Lord of the Rings

Deep down here by the dark water lived old Gollum, a small slimy creature. I don’t know where he came from nor who or what he was. He was Gollum—as dark as darkness, except for two big round pale eyes in his thin face. He had a little boat, and he rowed about quite quietly on the lake; for lake it was, wide and deep and deadly cold.

Whisked away from his comfortable, unambitious life in his hobbit-hole in Bag End by Gandalf the wizard and a band of dwarves, Bilbo Baggins finds himself caught up in a plot to raid the treasure hoard of Smaug the Magnificent, a large and very dangerous dragon.

This unabridged recording is narrated by the acclaimed actor, director, and author, Andy Serkis.

"The Hobbit by J.R.R. Tolkien and narrated by Andy Serkis is an absolutely brilliant audiobook that I would highly recommend to any fan of the written works of Tolkien, as well as anyone seeking a truly immersive listening experience. The intricate storytelling and stunning narration provided by Serkis make for a theatrical, captivating adventure as listeners follow Bilbo Baggins through Middle-Earth on his quest to help the dwarves reclaim their kingdom from the dragon Smaug. The narrator brings Tolkien's characters to life with profound expressions and enchanting descriptions that truly make you feel like you're part of the journey. From Bilbo's initial hesitation to join the company of dwarves all the way to his triumphant return home, every detail is presented in breathtaking clarity thanks to Serkis' performance. In addition to providing an entertaining and thrilling story, this audiobook offers immense educational value as it introduces listeners to complex themes such as friendship, loyalty, courage, danger and self-discovery. While the storyline itself is a classic tale of heroic adventure, Tolkien's writing style also allows for meaningful interpretations about life lessons and morality tales—allowing for personal growth through imagination and understanding. For example, when faced with danger or difficult decisions throughout his journey, Bilbo often thinks deeply about his courses of action before coming up with resourceful solutions that ultimately test his limits and help him grow as a character; this serves as an inspiring message for younger audiences who can learn from Bilbo's courage in spite of fear or doubt. I couldn't be more pleased with Andy Serkis' masterful narration of The Hobbit; it truly adds a new level of appreciation and understanding when diving into JRR Tolkien's beloved world of Middle Earth! With its perfect mix of entertainment value and educational aspects, this audiobook is sure to leave listeners feeling inspired and informed—a surefire sign that it was done right!"
