A psychologist learns from his patients what really works and what doesn't! Many years of counseling have enabled Dr. Henry Cloud to observe people trying to work out the most important issues of life—issues like relationships, career, fulfillment, meaning, pain, hurt, loss, despair and addictions. And here’s what he learned: There are some universal principles, similar to gravity, that operate at all times and in every situation that simply must be learned and applied for people to live with strength, purpose and joy. Dr. Cloud gives nine insightful ideas from “Hate Well” to “Play Fair” that reveal to us the truth about our fears, our hopes, our relationships, and above all, about the potential in all of us to grow spiritually. If we sincerely want to “get life right” and quit repeating the same mistakes over and over again, 9 Things You Simply Must Do provides the practical guidance we need to live life to its fullest—every moment. " I've read a lot of books on personal productivity, and Henry Cloud is the best author of the genre. "

  • 4 out of 54 out of 54 out of 54 out of 54 out of 5 Patti | 2/10/2014

" Another for Pastoral Counseling but it has been very interesting so far. reading for book review so it's been quick. will probably go back and read again another time. "

  • 5 out of 55 out of 55 out of 55 out of 55 out of 5 Kydustbunny | 1/31/2014

" Enjoyable read with personal examples illustrating solid tips for more intentional living. (I read this book while on the Mayan Riviera this Spring.) Reminded me of Stephen Covey's "7 Habits" in sections (which have helped me tremendously!) For instance, Cloud's suggestion that we "Play the Movie" was dead on Covey's concept that we "Begin with the End in Mind." This concept alone is powerful! "

  • 3 out of 53 out of 53 out of 53 out of 53 out of 5 Melissa | 1/28/2014

" Lots of good nuggets in this book, from "play the whole movie" and "don't play fair". Good concepts to apply to any situation. "

  • 5 out of 55 out of 55 out of 55 out of 55 out of 5 Jody Phillips | 1/27/2014

" Henry Cloud is one of my heroes. I loved this book. The examples he uses to illustrate his points are perfect. It's a fast read and my first choice for the New Year's resolution to read one book a month about inner improvement. "

  • 4 out of 54 out of 54 out of 54 out of 54 out of 5 Dena Rosko | 1/20/2014

" Appreciated his advice in chapter Four, or move quickly to deal w/whatever crushes the spirit to avoid wasting life energy + time on negative energy w/o resolution. Clear out space-takers that don't contribute to life, + discern b/t wish (subjective reality) + hope (grounded in evidence). Heed the "cringe factor," or opt out of things that you intuit as not right for you. Make room for good in your life. Etc.! "

  • 4 out of 54 out of 54 out of 54 out of 54 out of 5 Vaughn | 1/18/2014

" A wonderful book with lasting relevancy. Dr. Cloud suggests that we dig up our past and invest in our talents, move past the negative, make decisions based on their effects, ALWAYS ask how we can improve a situation (whether it's our responsibility or not), realize our loftiest goals through small steps, protect the good with healthy hatred, practice humility, and make decisions based on values and purposes / principles (not on the reactions of others). He concludes with a series of 12 steps to realizing each of these 'things,' not the least of which is "pray, pray, pray." "

  • 3 out of 53 out of 53 out of 53 out of 53 out of 5 Angela | 1/16/2014

" This book is a very quick read. The 9 things are very simplistic. If you have ever read any 12 step literature, a lot of his sayings and ideas are taken directly from their slogans and literature. The message is basically to have good boundaries, be true to yourself and trust your instincts. "

  • 5 out of 55 out of 55 out of 55 out of 55 out of 5 Emmanuel Donkor | 1/9/2014

" 9 simple things. In fact they are so simple that many of us might think this is a joke. And yet, they are vitally important to our effectiveness here on earth. "

  • 4 out of 54 out of 54 out of 54 out of 54 out of 5 Anahlise | 1/4/2014

" It was clear and full of useful information. He outlines clear and simple principles that can further the quality of your life if applied. I appreciated his insight, and the fact it was put forward intelligently but simply. "

  • 4 out of 54 out of 54 out of 54 out of 54 out of 5 Lisa | 12/15/2013

" I liked most things about this book. The author seems to have seriously bad luck in business dealings and I could have done without the Bible verses every two seconds. Other than that, lots of useful information. "

  • 5 out of 55 out of 55 out of 55 out of 55 out of 5 Roger | 11/13/2013
