Publisher Description

A psychologist learns from his patients what really works and what doesn't! Many years of counseling have enabled Dr. Henry Cloud to observe people trying to work out the most important issues of life—issues like relationships, career, fulfillment, meaning, pain, hurt, loss, despair and addictions. And here’s what he learned: There are some universal principles, similar to gravity, that operate at all times and in every situation that simply must be learned and applied for people to live with strength, purpose and joy. Dr. Cloud gives nine insightful ideas from “Hate Well” to “Play Fair” that reveal to us the truth about our fears, our hopes, our relationships, and above all, about the potential in all of us to grow spiritually. If we sincerely want to “get life right” and quit repeating the same mistakes over and over again, 9 Things You Simply Must Do provides the practical guidance we need to live life to its fullest—every moment.

"A wonderful book with lasting relevancy. Dr. Cloud suggests that we dig up our past and invest in our talents, move past the negative, make decisions based on their effects, ALWAYS ask how we can improve a situation (whether it's our responsibility or not), realize our loftiest goals through small steps, protect the good with healthy hatred, practice humility, and make decisions based on values and purposes / principles (not on the reactions of others). He concludes with a series of 12 steps to realizing each of these 'things,' not the least of which is "pray, pray, pray.""

" Enjoyable read with personal examples illustrating solid tips for more intentional living. (I read this book while on the Mayan Riviera this Spring.) Reminded me of Stephen Covey's "7 Habits" in sections (which have helped me tremendously!) For instance, Cloud's suggestion that we "Play the Movie" was dead on Covey's concept that we "Begin with the End in Mind." This concept alone is powerful! "

" Appreciated his advice in chapter Four, or move quickly to deal w/whatever crushes the spirit to avoid wasting life energy + time on negative energy w/o resolution. Clear out space-takers that don't contribute to life, + discern b/t wish (subjective reality) + hope (grounded in evidence). Heed the "cringe factor," or opt out of things that you intuit as not right for you. Make room for good in your life. Etc.! "

" This book is a very quick read. The 9 things are very simplistic. If you have ever read any 12 step literature, a lot of his sayings and ideas are taken directly from their slogans and literature. The message is basically to have good boundaries, be true to yourself and trust your instincts. "
