Publisher Description

Newly reissued, the chilling true story of Bradly Morris Cunningham, the handsome and successful entrepreneur adored by five beautiful and brilliant women who gave him everything he ever wanted—including their very lives.

When attorney Cheryl Keeton's brutally bludgeoned body was found in her van in the fast lane of an Oregon freeway, her husband, Brad Cunningham, was the likely suspect. But there was no solid evidence linking him to the crime. He married again, for the fifth time, and his stunning new wife, a physician named Sara, adopted his three sons. They all settled down to family life on a luxurious estate. But gradually, their marriage became a nightmare....

In this gripping account of Cheryl's murder, Ann Rule takes us from Brad's troubled boyhood to one of the most bizarre trials in legal history, uncovering multiple marriages, financial manipulations, infidelities, and monstrous acts of harassment and revenge along the way. "A perceptive character analysis of a malignant, self-centered, charismatic con artist," (Publishers Weekly) this is a fascinating and haunting tale.

"Ann Rule has lead the reader through one man's life as he destroys life after life, if not literally figuratively. You almost wonder at the start, how can the police not KNOW he did this?!?!?! Then you find yourself relating to events, to people who've woven believable tales and before you know it, you're feeling as mislead as the detectives that worked the case! Thank goodness for one cautious driver and another Ann Rule favorite."

Quotes

  • “Rule provides a perceptive character analysis of a malignant, self-centered, charismatic con artist. It’s a chilling, haunting portrait.”

    — Publishers Weekly
  • “Rule’s writing is crisp and well paced, full of details that give the reader clear insight into circumstances and surroundings, as well as motive. Not only is Cunningham revealed as a master of manipulation and, ultimately, murder, but with the added dimension of sociopath-one who is absolutely unfazed by his crimes. Rule, if possible, has outdone herself.”

    — Library Journal
  • “Through Rule’s exhaustive psychological retrospective, Cunningham emerges as a sadistic, maladaptive depressive, whose dark side is eventually exposed. Narrator Richard Ferrone’s sexy, intimate reading style is hypnotic as Cunningham seduces, then marries each of five women.”

    — AudioFile
  • “Sufficiently creepy stuff from the master of true crime…Rule keeps the reader’s expectations roiling during the years it takes Oregon police to solve the crime, and the life she examines is indeed a strange one.”

" I am an avid True Crime Reader and Ann Rule has that market cornered with no competition. This was the first one I read of hers, and she is a superb"historian". She really gets the story and tells it with such empathy. I am an Ann Rule addict. The unfortunate part of this, is that there is always a true life horrendous story that is being told. "
