In this provocative and eye-opening classic of investigative journalism, the #1 New York Times bestselling author and “America’s best true-crime writer” (Kirkus Reviews), Ann Rule, explores the nearly twenty-year long search for America’s most prolific and horrifying serial killer.
In 1982, the body of Wendy Coffield is discovered floating near the sandy shore of Washington’s Green River. Authorities have no idea that this tragic and violent death is only the beginning of a string of murders that will rock and terrify the Seattle area for two decades.
With her signature riveting prose and in-depth research, Ann Rule takes us behind the scenes of the search for the Green River Killer, a terrifying specter who ritualistically killed young women and eluded authorities for years. From seeking the help of incarcerated serial killer Ted Bundy to Ann Rule’s horrifying realization that the killer she was writing about had attended her book signings, Green River, Running Red is the suspenseful and unforgettable “definitive narrative of the brutal and senseless crimes that haunted the Seattle area for decades” (Publishers Weekly).

"This book took me a while to read. It's pretty long, but it's very intense so I found myself only able to read a short amount at a time. The book is very detailed (and sometimes graphic) and takes you from start to finish. I would recommend this book to anyone who likes true crime or crime fiction reading."

"Riveting."
— People"Conveys the emotional truth of the Green River case."
— Los Angeles Times"Perhaps Rule's finest work."
— Statesman Journal (Salem, OR)"Rule gives full, heartbreaking emotional weight to what America's most notorious serial killer truly wrought. A must for the author's legions of fans."
— Booklist" Ann Rule has a great way of creating a narrative. This book was extremely well written and haunting! "
— Ariana, 2/18/2014" I am a huge Ann Rule fan and found this book hard to put down. "
— Jeannie, 2/16/2014" Gripping from start to finish; well, if you like serial killer books. The truth in near catches and so much more make the reader feel the frustration and the eventual relief when GRK was caught. "
— Claudia, 2/10/2014" Another shocking reveal of our cruel inner-self "
— G, 2/8/2014" I lived in Seattle during the time of the GRK's most active phase and was thrilled when I saw that Anne Rule had written her account. I knew the research and insight would be fabulous. She did not disappoint (she does disappoint me on the short stories/anthogies. I just don't read them anymore). "
— Beth, 2/3/2014" The green river killer was so awful - he's not worth a book about him and this one gets a little tedious after a while. "
— Cheryl, 1/25/2014" Very interesting, especially since I live in the NW. Rule gave alot of attention to the victims, she went into alot of detail about their lives and families. This was my first "True Crime" book, it was good but I like fiction better! "
— Marcy, 1/21/2014" A very well written true crime book written about a horrible man. "
— Laurie, 1/20/2014" As far as true crime goes, this was one of my faves! It was really the only book of it's kind that made me afraid at night. That's a good thing for me, but may not be for others. Definately not for the faint of heart, but if you like true crime this is a great one! "
— Leslie, 1/12/2014" Horribly gruesome. I read it in two days! "
— Miranda, 12/24/2013" I lived through this period of time as a young adult and these murders happened in my backyard. Ann Rule writes about solving the crime and the mind behind the criminal managing to leave out the gory details of the murder itself. For this reason I am able to read about these crimes. "
— Joyce, 11/30/2013" Too mush info would of like to read more about criminal then victims. Much to long... Lot of repeating of each victims... did not like this book that much. "
— Frances, 11/28/2013" Ann Rule is a true crime writer. What I liked about this book is that she honored the victims of the killer, rather than just concentrating on the killer "
— Dodi, 11/27/2013" Well written with lots of details. I found this book both arousing and sickening and it literally gave me nightmares. "
— Flasher702, 8/14/2013" a bit disturbing. I couldn't put it down, but not for good reasons "
— Kim, 6/11/2013" Not written well. At all. But the material is fascinating. "
— Carey, 6/3/2013" hmm...i finished this book on the plane and then promptly left it tucked in the seat. (on purpose) "
— Paul, 5/15/2013" Overly detailed, a bit hard to follow. And a bit too pat on the backish for the police department. But if you're a true crime fan, Ann Rule is a must read - all of them. "
— Ami, 12/14/2012" I didn't know as much about the Green River Killer as I did about other serial killers until just recently. Ann Rule does a great job on this as always. I listened to an abridged copy of this on Cd but I think I would like to read a hard copy of it as well. "
— Dee, 9/29/2012" I expected this to be much more scarey than it was, however I didn't expect it to hit home as much as it did. Definitely a must read for anyone who grew up in my hood. "
— Seana, 8/25/2012" Ann Rule does it again. I love the way this woman writes, and her subject matter is always fascinating: true, horrific crime. Still, she brings a dignity to the re-telling, respectful of the victims and their families. If you like reading about true crime, Ann Rule is your next best read. "
— Mollie, 5/19/2012" I love Anne Rule with all my heart but this book is taking me forever to finish :( "
— Gisela, 5/15/2012" My mom was a bit repulsed...being a psych major...i was enthralled...but it is a chilly read. "
— Jillain, 5/15/2012" What can I say? I love true crime novels. Though this one is a bit slow at times...mass murderers are facinating creatures. "
— Bonny, 5/3/2012" Unbelievable that this guy got away with this for so long. and lived a somewhat normal life!! "
— Cindy, 1/12/2012" There were so many murders in this book Ann Rule wasn't able to detail all of the victims' lives. I found this rather unsettling because each victim was a person that did not deserve their fate. "
— Kalah, 10/18/2011" Ann Rule is the queen of true crime. Incredible story. "
— Rod, 8/22/2011" Well written with lots of details. I found this book both arousing and sickening and it literally gave me nightmares. "
— Flasher702, 4/25/2011" Ann Rule's extraordinary writing once again takes a gripping true crime drama and takes it over the top from absurdly creeping to downright horrifying. Not skimpy on the harrowing details, this account is not for the faint of heart. "
— Ruthette, 3/1/2011" A very well written true crime book written about a horrible man. "
— Laurie, 2/23/2011" This one wasn't as thrilling as some of her others. I wasn't that familiar with the case so it was an eye opener. I admire the way she described the victims with such empathy and dignity and the way she wove the killer's life into theirs and the investigation. "
— Cusmarg, 2/20/2011" I didn't know as much about the Green River Killer as I did about other serial killers until just recently. Ann Rule does a great job on this as always. I listened to an abridged copy of this on Cd but I think I would like to read a hard copy of it as well. "
— Dee, 2/12/2011" Overall a pretty good read. However, the author tends to bounce around with her timeline, which makes following along difficult at times. "
— Barbara, 12/25/2010" This book was fascinating and terrifying. "
— Peacegal, 12/18/2010" Ann Rule did it again. Absolutely astounding that this guy was able to get away with so much for so long. In my opinion, it's on par with "The Stranger Beside Me," as one of her best! "
— Jess, 12/11/2010" Kept me reading could not put it down...so sad that he killed so many before he was found out. "
— Jennifer, 12/5/2010" A very interesting book. I was really surprised at the killer's history and how he was able to carry out his murders without getting caught. "
