Publisher Description

Internationally acclaimed forensic anthropologist and New York Times bestselling author Kathy Reichs explores Stockholm syndrome—the psychology of a captive submitting to the ideology of a captor—in this mesmerizing new thriller.

The bones of three young women are unearthed in the basement of a Montreal pizza parlor, and forensic anthropologist Tempe Brennan has unsolved murder on her mind as she examines the shallowly buried remains. Coming up against a homicide cop who is convinced the dead have been entombed on the site for centuries, Tempe perseveres, even as her own relationship with Detective Andrew Ryan is at a delicate turning point. In the lab, the clean, well-preserved bones offer few clues. But when carbon-14 dating confirms her hunch that these were recent deaths despite the antique buttons found near the bodies, Tempe finds herself drawn deep into a web of evil from which there may be no escape. Women have disappeared, never to return...and she may be next.

"Yet another book that has a cracking pace to build up to the climax of the story that just keeps on going. I really enjoy reading this series, but find it more and more grating that Tempe goes ahead and puts herself into dangerous situations time and time again without consulting the people whose job it is to actually do these things!! Anyway, it's still four stars as I did enjoy it, staying up to past midnight at least two nights running turning the pages."

Quotes

  • “What’s best about Reichs, and often unappreciated in reviews, is not the informative detail that she brings to Tempe’s forensic sleuthing, though that’s certainly engrossing. It’s the same well-observed detail and incisive analysis applied to other aspects of the story.”

    — Publishers Weekly
  • “A fast-paced and suspenseful mystery in a deservedly popular series.”

    — Booklist

Awards

  • A USA Today bestseller
  • A New York Times bestseller

" I listened to the abridged audiobook version of this title (hope that counts as "reading" it....). The plot was good, and I didn't feel like I was missing any important details. If anything, I was glad to not have to listen to the small details that I already know, since this is a series with repeat characters and relationships that I am already familiar with and no longer need the history of. " If you like the Bones tv series, this is nothing like it. Ok, so the tv series is based off of this author's books, but Temperance Brennen is nothing in the book like she is on the show. However that being said, while I'm a huge fan of the show, I also like the books. Basically, you have the anthropologist figuring out who the body is and who dun it, and throw in a little of her personal life and drama. They are engaging and enjoyable. Warning - she has no issue with swear words. This one actually has less than some, but some have quite a bit. The main character doesn't use a lot, and uses the milder ones generally, but bad guys and cops don't mind turning the air blue on occasion. "
