Beneath the Pacific Ocean, a volcano surges upward, carrying in its fiery heart a mineral more powerful than uranium. When the volcano breaks the ocean’s surface, America and other nations will battle to control what is known as Vulcan’s Forge, a source of limitless, clean, nuclear power.
The secret of Vulcan’s Forge begins to unravel when Mercer, a man of many talents now working for the United States Geologic Survey, learns that the daughter of an old friend is in danger. Saving her takes Mercer from the Oval Office to a secret submarine off Hawaii. On the islands, the secession movement, controlled by a megalomaniac Japanese multimillionaire, has turned violent, and the United States trembles on the brink of civil war.

"This is Jack Du Brul's first book, introducing readers to Philip Mercer, a geologist working as an independent contractor for the USGS, who is brought into the world of intregue with a telegram from a dead friend that saved his life earlier, asking for his assistance to save his daughter. The story unfolds drawing us into his story, introduces us to Harry White & Tiny who will appear in future stories as well. All in all the story draws the reader in and holds your attention, making it very hard to put down. It is very well developed and cohesive, a good read."

" The beginning and the end of the book are lame. The middle is OK. Glad I finished. "
— Logan, 2/20/2014" This was a well written and entertaining book. The only reason for three stars is because I have already read another one of his books and the plots are similar. Don't get me wrong it is definitely a different story but.... the basic plot is the same.... Guy saves girl... then saves world... then gets the girl... very James Bond-ish. Very entertaining. "

— Jeff, 2/15/2014" I would give this book 3.5 stars. Pretty much a rip-off of Clive Cussler's Dirk Pitt novels, I don't mind so much however because the author does it well. I will read another of his books. "

— Jack, 2/8/2014" Boring. Very slow novel. Frequent use of poor language. Got past page 50 then threw it away. Almost zero action. I had higher expectations for this novel and author based on the endorsements by Clive Cussler. Stick with Cussler. Forget DuBrul. "

— Crafty4life, 2/1/2014" I read The Medusa Stone first and loved it. This, the first in the Mercer series seemed a little bit heavy with hard facts and didn't flow as smoothly as Medusa. The info was key to the story and brilliantly conceived but didn't fit well for me. The parts with Mercer were amazing. Du Brul has created a character that I love and I will definitely read every book in this series. All in all 3 stars for the story and 5 stars for Mercer (I'm throwing Harry in too). Mercer kicks ass! Looking forward to book 2 in the series. "
