At four in the morning, the night of his 25th birthday, Baron Montford finds himself quite sauced with a large group of gentlemen in his library. The Huxtables have recently fallen into a great deal of wealth and prominence, and Katherine Huxtable knows that she's been lucky in every way but one. Despite her great beauty and newfound life of leisure, Katherine believes she is not made for passion or romance. She has avoided any suitors and all men of the ton, Lord Montford most of all due to his notoriety of as a dangerous rakehell.
With a sour reputation, Baron Montford certainly has a steep hill to climb - will he lose his wager or perhaps even his heart?

"I always enjoy Mary Balough's family series! I love this sister's fierst loyalty to her family and her ability to laugh at herself. I thought the story line was great, a little dark and mysterious but very credible in dealing with spousal abuse. The fact that the male lead character was as hard and honorable as he was gentle and loving was icing on the cake!" — Mornie (5 out of 5 stars)

" Waiting for the next two in this series-- "
" 4.00 Stars - Regency/Historical Romance. "
" Second in the series, Katherine, the youngest sister marries a rogue amidst scandal, but love conquers all. "
" Life's too short for boring books. I struggled through half of it before finally deciding to give up. The "wager" plot is a major turnoff for me and I wasn't particularly inspired by the interactions of the hero and heroine. I usually love Mary Balogh, but the only reaction this story elicited was "meh". "
" love this series... and can not wait for the library to call saying they have the last 3 books in for me to pick up! "
" Wonderful, character-driven story. Balogh at her best. Even better than First Comes Marriage, and I liked that one quite a bit. Can't wait for the third one in this series. "
" I read this because I like the regency romances of Georgette Heyer, but this didn't measure up to hers. It seemed too contemporary to me and the explicit sex scenes seeemed out of place. "
" It kinda fell apart at the end for me. I like the Huxtable siblings though and will continue with the series to read about Meg and Stephen in the next 2 books. "
" my second time and i still loved Kate and Jasper. "
" So much better than the first of this series. From something that started as a wager then turns into love, I thought that this was a really good book and it's like nothing I've read before. "
" More like 3.75. "
" It took this book a long time to win me over (the wager was just SO un-gentleman-like), but by the end I was tearing up in spots. Not her best bad guys, though. "
" This story was utterly charming. I enjoyed reading about Katherine and Jasper as I found them delightful. It was a pleasant interlude. "
" What I expected from a Historical Romance. Entertaining and fun. Not a book I need to read again, but I liked it. "
" It started off promising. Towards the middle I lost interest. The humor and anticipation kept me excited to read more. Once that was gone, I gave up. Sorry :( "
" Too sweet and too impossible (of course that's the point of reading novel) hehehe, but I enjoy it anyway :) "
" 2nd in Hux ser,Katherine and jasper, v good, steamy sex "
" a commentary on social mores rather than any plot "
" 2nd, Rogue marries younger sister, bet on seduction of her in 2 weeks "
" It started off slow, but then it became really interesting. I really enjoyed it. "
" A predictable Victorian Romance. 2nd in a series of four. "
" I really enjoy seeing Kate break through Jasper's emotional wall in this story ... "
" I loved the whole series!!! "
" Another cute, mindless read. Liked this one better than the first in the series. "
" Good. The Huxtables is a solid series. "
" Like this series. I like the small glimpse into what that time must have been like for women. Cute stories, predictable but fun. "
" This is book 2 of the Huxtable stories with Jasper and Katherine as the Hero and Heroine. It was hard for me to like the hero very much. I didn't hate him but he was lacking it character. For me this story fell short compared to book 1. "
