Reginald Mason is wealthy, refined, and, by all accounts, a gentleman. However, he is not a gentleman by birth, a factor that pains him and his father, Bernard Mason, within the Regency society that upholds station over all else. That is, until an opportunity for social advancement arises, namely, Lady Annabelle Ashton. Daughter of the Earl of Havercroft, a neighbor and enemy of the Mason family, Annabelle finds herself disgraced by a scandal, one that has left her branded as damaged goods. Besmirched by shame, the earl is only too happy to marry Annabelle off to anyone willing to have her. Though Bernard wishes to use Annabelle to propel his family up the social ladder, his son does not wish to marry her, preferring instead to live the wild, single life he is accustomed to. With this, Bernard serves his son an ultimatum: marry Annabelle, or make do without family funds. Having no choice, Reginald consents, and enters into a hostile engagement in which the prospective bride and groom are openly antagonistic, each one resenting the other for their current state of affairs while their respective fathers revel in their suffering. So begins an intoxicating tale rife with dark secrets, deception, and the trials of love—a story in which very little is as it seems.

"I picked this book thinking it would be a quick read at only 190 page, and being a historical fiction, my favorite genre, was just a bonus. So I was pleasantly surprised by how much I was drawn into this book, and really liked the plot twist. I look forward to reading more from this author."

" A great novella from Balogh. Won't go into it more than that to avoid spoilers "
— Michael, 2/13/2014" A fun little historical romance with an enjoyable plot development. Reginald is rich, from working class, and schooled as a gentleman. Annabelle is a poor earls daughter who is ruined by scandal. A betrothal is arranged and these families from different classes must interact. "
— Dawn, 2/2/2014" This is probably Balogh's funniest book. Her books are always excellent romances, but very few romance writers can handle humor as deftly. "
— Pat, 1/29/2014" This is a sweet, cute romance that is very cleverly written. It alternates between his and her perspectives and the present and the past. Delightful! "
— Carla, 1/26/2014" Wow...this is a little book with a story of people who you don't exactly realize their characters til you read on and on...quite a little treasure. "
— Grace, 1/22/2014" Well done, as all of Balogh's books are, but I dropped a star for a well used plot. If I could, it would be 3 1/2 stars. Well used or not, I enjoyed it. "
— Bob, 1/17/2014" Predictable--and not in the way that romances are always predictable and which I fully support, the HEA. I probably would have liked this better had it been packaged as the novella in an anthology. As it was, I figured out the twist on page 3 or so, and the rest of it was nothing special at all. "
— Liz, 1/17/2014" Wonderful book! It was very well written & had this unexpected twist that make it stand out among other Ms Balogh's works. I highly recommend that you read it! "
— NatÄlija, 1/5/2014" Interesting period novel with a twist. "
— Pam, 12/28/2013" I'm a fan of historical romance, so this disappoints. "
— Dana, 12/23/2013" Loved this book - the twist is unexpected and wonderful. Great Love Story!! "
— Peggy, 12/20/2013" This is a short, fun read. I recommend it for light beach reading or a rainy afternoon. "
— Shira, 12/6/2013" Though the ending was easy to see, it did not take away from the heartfelt story of these two main characters: Annabelle Ashton and Reginald Mason. "
— Rose, 12/4/2013" A quick light read that telegraphed the final twist way ahead. Quite enjoyable, but insubstantial. "
— Lian, 11/7/2013" A sweet, light historical romance between two characters of different social classes. "
— Nicole, 11/3/2013" Excellently written. It was like the Scarlet Pimpernel for me; surprising and better than I expected. There is a spicy part FYI. Two fathers are forcing their son and daughter to marry, but what we find is that this forced marriage may not be as bad as they thought. "
— Susan, 6/23/2013" Good story. It kept me entertained. This is an author I will continue to seek out if I need a "filler" book. It was short, so I was able to use it to fill in time.. "
— Naomi, 6/2/2013" Delightful short story read. Young love. "
— Lydia, 1/19/2013" I found this book by accident and have since read others by this author, which are well-written, fluffy and fun, but I really enjoyed this one. It is a light enchanting regency romance with a twist. "
— Ellen, 12/13/2012" This book was written to satisfy a market for shorter reads. It went really fast, but had the hallmarks of a good Balogh read. "
— Angelyn, 11/24/2012" A light but enjoyable read. "
— Knitter, 11/12/2012" A very sweet story about love conquering all! :) "
— Me, 11/10/2012" This book starts out quite slow, but if anyone is reading this trying to decide whether to keep going, do it! The ending was a very nice surprise, and while I don't think id re-read this book, Id defibately say its ending makes up for the slow beginning. "
— Kas, 9/30/2012" A pretty typical romance, fun but light. At least it was set in regency England which was kind of fun. "
— Nicki, 6/24/2012" Was a very cute and fast read. I would reread it to pass time. "
— Angela, 4/10/2012" Quick, sweet and different. I loved it!! "
— Tif, 2/29/2012" It was woth the $$! "
— Janga, 2/23/2012" I do love regency-era novels, and this one had engaging characters and an interesting back-story. Unfortunately, the soft porn dropped this from likable to avoidable. "
— Jami, 12/4/2011" I really enjoyed it. It was short sweet and good. "
— Christy, 11/17/2011" Very easy read with a good twist at the end. Easy summer reading. "
— Candace, 5/8/2011" Typical Mary Balogh...great fun to listen to - lots of romance with a bit of sex thrown in - lots of "Oh Reggie" throughout. Loved it...won't expand your mind...but perfect for walking on the treadmill. "
— Bedford, 5/6/2011" What a nice turnabout ending! Just like a good mystery, it makes you want to re-read the whole thing to pick out the clues. "
— Kathyred, 5/2/2011" This was a predictable, easy, read. Nothing remarkable! "
— Laura, 4/28/2011" I gave it a 3 because I quickly figured out what the twist was. "
— Michelle, 4/27/2011" I'm a fan of historical romance, so this disappoints. "
— Dana, 4/16/2011" I would call this a short story, not a novel. It is only 190 pages (in the hard cover editon), and I knew what the whole plot was going to be by page 33. Overall, a decent book, just not one that I would recommend as a to-read. "
— Kristal, 4/10/2011" awesome book, love the twist at the end. not the usual romance novel. "
— Dana, 4/9/2011" A short book, I read it in a matter of hours. I can't remember when I last had so much fun just from reading. It is delightful in every way. "
— Maria, 3/8/2011" I loved this!! I figured out out the clever twist before the end, but just barely!! "
— Donna, 3/7/2011" This is a sweet, cute romance that is very cleverly written. It alternates between his and her perspectives and the present and the past. Delightful! "
— Carla, 3/1/2011" Really loved this book! Great story, great writing! "
— Louise, 2/15/2011" So cute a fun read on a snowy or rainy afternoon. They don't all have to be heavy, you know. "
