Publisher Description

Book three of the Austin Family Chronicles, an award-winning young adult series from Madeleine L'Engle, author of A Wrinkle in Time, about a girl who experiences the difficulties and joys of growing up. "A first-rate suspense story." -The Washington Post Book World The Austins are trying to settle into their new life in New York City, but their once close-knit family is pulling away from each other. Their father spends long hours alone in his study working on the research project that brought the family to the city. John is away at college. Rob is making friends with people in the neighborhood: newspaper vendors, dog walkers, even the local rabbi. Suzy is blossoming into a vivacious young woman. And Vicky has become closer to Emily Gregory, a blind and brilliant young musician, than to her sister Suzy. With the Austins going in different directions, they don't notice that something sinister is going on in their neighborhood-and it's centered around them. A mysterious genie appears before Rob and Emily. A stranger approaches Vicky in the park and calls her by name. Members of a local gang are following their father. The entire Austin family is in danger. If they don't start telling each other what's going on, someone just might get killed.

"I love this book! Besides Many Waters, which is an amazing book, this is my favorite L'Engle. It features the Austins, one of L'Engle's two main families, but it really stars Josiah Davidson, a former member of the Alphabats gang, and the Austin's blind friend Emily. Lately, rumors have been abounding that the Alphabats are planning something. Robbie and Suzy Austin had an encounter with a potential genie, and the man who blinded Emily while rifling through her father's office still has not been identified. What do all of these mysteries add up to? Awesomeness. I would recommend this book to anyone and everyone!"

" When I read this book as a kid, I actually kind of hated it. I think I've always identified so much with Vicky that any Austin family book not narrated by her just wasn't worth my time. This time around, I just read it like any Madeleine L'Engle book (that is, kind of ridiculous, with weird fake science and espionage) and enjoyed it. That being said, I still don't think it really belongs with the other four books in the series. "

" Definitely one of the weaker L'Engle books. It doesn't stand on its own at all. It's hard to care about a lot of the new characters, and the lame-o plot twists are obvious from a mile away. I sort of love the Austin family, but at many points in this story, I wanted to knock their heads together. "

" I found this book quite unnerving when I first read it, and it made a profound impression. However, my proudest (most shameful?) moment was in college taking Shakespeare when the final exam included a question about Coriolanus, which I had not actually had time to read because so busy writing in my journal. I had a moment of terror, then gritted my teeth, and began, "The noted writer, Madeleine L'Engle, in her tribute to Coriolanus..." "

" Even taking the Time Quartet into consideration, this is just about my favorite L'Engle book. Emily Gregory is an amazing character and the plot -- including shenanigans around St. John the Divine -- remains one of the strangest, most involving I've read, since I first read this at age 11. "
