“Taking sides (right vs. wrong) and teaming up provides both the suspense and the philosophical tug-of-war in this imaginative story of a sixteen-year-old high school graduate who unwittingly becomes involved in international intrigue…Adam is a dashing, sophisticated sort, but not without his human qualities. The situation has been foisted upon him but it is one which demands that he commit himself…Solidly detailed, excitingly sustained adventure.”

— Kirkus Reviews

Quotes

  • “Tense, tricky, well-plotted, The Arm of the Starfish has all the stuff of which adult spy novels are made.”

    — New York Times Book Review
  • “From the opening paragraph…its atmosphere tense with hurry and frustrations, the story rushes ahead, never losing momentum.”

    — Horn Book Magazine
  • “What [Adam Eddington] expects to be a quiet but interesting summer of work with the famous marine biologist Dr. O’Keefe becomes a time of intrigue, with Adam playing a leading role in the struggle to extract information on the doctor’s experiments with regeneration of starfish.”

    — School Library Journal
  • “The first book in Madeleine L’Engle’s O’Keefe family series is narrated with appropriate formality by Michael Crouch, whose delivery suits the old-fashioned storytelling…Crouch keeps the harrowing adventure moving with changes in pacing and inflection.”
