Will Tyler can fly on a football field. He may not be the biggest running back around, but no one can touch him when it comes to hitting the hole and finding the end zone. And no one can match his love of the game. When Will has a football in hand, he may as well be flying for real because life can't touch him—his dad isn't so defeated, his town isn't so poor, and everyone has something to cheer for. All of which does him no good if the football season is canceled. With no funding for things like uniforms and a cared-for playing field, with seemingly every other family moving to find jobs, there simply isn't enough money or players for a season. Unless one kid can rally an entire town and give everyone a reason to believe…
For fans of his bestselling novels Travel Team and Million-Dollar Throw, Mike Lupica delivers a feel-good sports story that will have readers cheering where they sit.

"The book The Underdogs, is a good story if you are looking for a laugh and your spirits lifted. This book is about a young boy named Will Tyler that wants to save the football program in his home town of Forbes. He succeeds by writing a letter to the CEO of New Balance. Throughout the story there is no shortage of wisecracks and jokes but overall this is a story of courage, faith, and determination. The theme of this story is what goes around comes around. For example, the main characters father has worked hard for all of his life, from a factory worker to a bike courier, it has been a hard journey for him. Now he is rewarded by coaching his sons team and being sponsored by New Balance, a very large sporting goods company. The main character loves the sport of football. This sport is his life. As the story goes on He becomes more and more mature throughout the story learning that there is no difference between a boy and a girl when it comes to playing sports. I would definitely recommend this book to anyone who loves happy endings."

" This book reminds me of an after school TV special. Will Tyler's town is "going out of business" and the money for his football team has been cut. Will finds a sponsor for his team, talks his dad into coaching the team, finds players for the team, and even when they are down, he has the heart to keep everyone together. The football metaphors were too much for me, but if I were a 10-12 year old boy, I would love this book. "
— Caitlintobin, 1/26/2014" This was a very good book because it was about a kid that had a passion for football and didn't let it go away because something was keeping it from him. His town was without money for football, so he came up with the courage to call New Balance to be able to supply his team with gear. That is where it all started for his team. They won as a team and never got down on themselves, in the end he got his dream of making it to the league championship. This was a very good book and maybe one of my favorites. "
