Joss McMillan’s perfect life crashes down the night he witnesses his sister’s murder—at the hands of a vampire. He then finds out his family’s secret heritage: They are part of the Slayer Society, a group whose mission is to rid the world of vampires. Joss is their new recruit. As Joss trains, bent on seeking revenge for his sister, he discovers powers that could make him the youngest, strongest Slayer in history. But there is a traitor in the Society, one whose identity would shake Joss to the core...if the traitor doesn’t kill him first.

" Loved it. I'm starting the second one tonight. "

" This series will offer a different perspective into the chronicles of Vladmir Todd. Joss' story provides a good read with some surprising twists and encounters with characters from that series. The continual mention of Cecile's demise and the fact that Joss "cares about people" is crucial information for the reader, but sort of bogs down the story with the repetition of those points. Also that two seasoned Slayers end up dead without putting up much of a fight is a bit hard to swallow. "

  • 4 out of 54 out of 54 out of 54 out of 54 out of 5 Angela | 2/8/2014

" Heather Brewer did not disappoint! It was great to see Joss' character develop. I understand him and Abraham a bit better. Although, I'm not sure I like Abraham. That summer of training was brutal and intense! I can't wait for #2! "

" The first book in Heather Brewer's companion series to her Vladamir Todd books opens on secret society with a sinister prologue which opens onto more bloodshed and tears. But true to Heather Brewer's style, the darker stuff is balanced by occasional light passages (the "renewing your faith in mankind") Also true to her style most of the dramatic action takes place with very little expectation. It's always unexpected and usually without any kind of foreshadowing. "
