"The first book in Heather Brewer's companion series to her Vladamir Todd books opens on secret society with a sinister prologue which opens onto more bloodshed and tears. But true to Heather Brewer's style, the darker stuff is balanced by occasional light passages (the "renewing your faith in mankind") Also true to her style most of the dramatic action takes place with very little expectation. It's always unexpected and usually without any kind of foreshadowing."

" Loved it. I'm starting the second one tonight. "
— Andria, 2/19/2014" This series will offer a different perspective into the chronicles of Vladmir Todd. Joss' story provides a good read with some surprising twists and encounters with characters from that series. The continual mention of Cecile's demise and the fact that Joss "cares about people" is crucial information for the reader, but sort of bogs down the story with the repetition of those points. Also that two seasoned Slayers end up dead without putting up much of a fight is a bit hard to swallow. "
— Debbie, 2/19/2014" Heather Brewer did not disappoint! It was great to see Joss' character develop. I understand him and Abraham a bit better. Although, I'm not sure I like Abraham. That summer of training was brutal and intense! I can't wait for #2! "
— Angela, 2/8/2014" I liked except for the giant plot holes. "
— Jade♪â˜, 2/1/2014" want to read the second book, but neither my school nor my local library have it!! "

— Cindy, 10/31/2013" I am very tempted to say that this book was even better that Brewer's Vlad Todd series and it is one of the few books I believe would be incredibly beautifil on the screen. I'm looking forward to Second Chance this fall! "
— Audrey, 10/7/2013" Another freebie that I enjoyed. I think I'll read the Chronicles of Vladimir Todd before getting into this series. It's nice to read from a male perspective. I haven't enjoyed a good one since Harry Potter. "
— Elsa, 7/5/2013" I don't know if I'll like it as much as the first series, but so far so good! "
— Stacy, 3/29/2013" Ugh. This book wasn't my favorite-it took forever to get to a storyline and then it just ended right when it got interesting. The characters were believable. I will not read anymore in this series. "
— Celeste, 2/20/2013" Loved it!! Can't wait to read the others. While this first book is quite violent with the training beatings, he is now ready to go after the vampires. "
— Marnie, 8/26/2012" Kind of fun - on a similar level as The Chronicles of Vladimir Todd. "
— Penny, 5/11/2012" I enjoyed it because it is like the male version of Buffy with many of the same things but with some differences. I could not believe that Sirus and his daughter were vampires and no one noticed during the beginning and middle of the book. I am about to read the second one. "
— Austin, 1/26/2012" I think it was a good and interesting book because it was from Vlad's friend/enemies point of view and now we know and understand why he's a slayer. So I give it 3 stars, and I can't wait for the next one to come out. "
