Gabriela McKenzie’s daughter has been kidnapped. In exchange for her safe return, her abductors demand two things: $400,000 in cash and a document known only as the “October List.”

Gabriela has thirty hours to deliver both. Coming up with such a huge sum of money is difficult enough. But Gabriela has no idea what the October List is, much less where it is or how to get it. All she knows is that her daughter’s kidnappers believe that her boss—who has suddenly, inexplicably vanished—possessed it, and they insist that Gabriela must be able to find it.

With the help of Daniel Reardon—a charismatic but mysterious man with an agenda of his own—Gabriela rushes headlong into a desperate search to solve the puzzle of the October List. And if she fails, she and her daughter will pay a fatal price.

Quotes & Awards

  • “Might well be Jeffery Deaver’s most fiendish thriller ever...As the pace quickens and the story continues to backtrack, solid evidence, established plot points, and sturdily built characters all begin to come undone, until what started out as an interactive game becomes a truly unnerving exercise in deception.”

    New York Times Book Review

  • “Deaver is a master of manipulation.”

    Associated Press

  • “Elegantly clever…The novel takes a mischievous delight in misleading the reader, without ever outright cheating. It offers a delightful game of wits with the author.”

    Columbus Dispatch

  • “A clever, demanding stand-alone…This is brilliant craftsmanship in a vastly entertaining package.”

    Publishers Weekly (starred review)

  • “Perhaps the cleverest of all Deaver’s exceptionally clever thrillers. If you’ve ever wished you could take the film Memento to the beach, here’s your chance.”

    Kirkus Reviews (starred review)

  • A New York Times Bestseller
  • A Publishers Weekly Bestseller
  • A USA Today Bestseller
  • A Los Angeles Times Bestseller
