Publisher Description

Jack Reacher. Hero. Loner. Soldier. Soldier’s son. An elite military cop, he was one of the army’s brightest stars. But in every cop’s life there is a turning point. One case. One messy, tangled case that can shatter a career. Turn a lawman into a renegade. And make him question words like honor, valor, and duty. For Jack Reacher, this is that case…

New Year’s Day, 1990. The Berlin Wall is coming down. The world is changing. And in a North Carolina “hot-sheets” motel, a two-star general is found dead. His briefcase is missing. Nobody knows what was in it. Within minutes Jack Reacher has his orders: Control the situation. But this situation can’t be controlled. Within hours the general’s wife is murdered hundreds of miles away. Then the dominoes really start to fall…

Two Special Forces soldiers—the toughest of the tough—are taken down, one at a time. Top military commanders are moved from place to place in a bizarre game of chess. And somewhere inside the vast worldwide fortress that is the U.S. Army, Jack Reacher—an ordinarily untouchable investigator for the 110th Special Unit—is being set up as a fall guy with the worst enemies a man can have.

But Reacher won’t quit. He’s fighting a new kind of war. And he’s taking a young female lieutenant with him on a deadly hunt that leads them from the ragged edges of a rural army post to the winding streets of Paris to a confrontation with an enemy he didn’t know he had. With his French-born mother dying—and divulging to her son one last, stunning secret—Reacher is forced to question everything he once believed…about his family, his career, his loyalties—and himself. Because this soldier’s son is on his way into the darkness, where he finds a tangled drama of desperate desires and violent death—and a conspiracy more chilling, ingenious, and treacherous than anyone could have guessed.

"One of my favorites in the series so far. This is the book that explains how and why Jack Reacher will leave his career as a military police. It takes place while Reacher is still an MP. He gets an emergency transfer to a new base and ends up investigating the death of a general, his wife and a Delta solider. There is a bigger coverup going on but it is complex and interesting. Also nice to meet Jack's brother Joe while he is alive and working for the Treasury department. An added bonus for me were the scenes in Paris."

Quotes

  • “[Child has] the good. This author’s Jack Reacher novels pack a ‘Dirty Harry’ wallop…The Enemy is tight and effective…Even the minor characters in this book have a tough panache…[Reacher] emerges as a classic noir loner, and a very charismatic one…Lean, dynamic storytelling.”

    — Seattle Times
  • “Will keep you guessing.”

    — Playboy
  • “Child has created a wonderfully tough, resourceful hero in Jack Reacher…Reacher is still one of the two or three most compelling figures in the new hard-guy, lone-wolf genre.”

    — Daily News
  • “A fabulously suspenseful prequel…[Lee Child’s] best so far.”

    — Kirkus Reviews (starred review)
  • “Textured, swift, and told in Reacher’s inimitably tough voice…Child has few peers in thrillerdom.”

    — Publishers Weekly (starred review)
  • “Compelling…Known for hold-your-breath action scenes, Child proves equally adept at portraying how a criminal investigation uses the smallest of building blocks to construct a compelling circumstantial case. Combine that with finely textured relationships—always an extra dimension in this series—and you have a novel that takes Child in a new direction, but does so flawlessly.”

" This is a fascinating account of a case that defined Reacher's military career. Once again, he manages to unspool interesting threads in the days when the Berlin Wall was coming down and the Cold War was ending. This meant a likely shift in the composition of the army and Reacher finds himself in the middle of that transition. Child's book takes advantage of using a reflective lens to foreshadow the geopolitical future as we know it now. Overall, it's another winner. "

" This was on the bookshelf in my vacation rental, and since everyone seems to like Lee Child, I picked it up. Great read, and I haven't read any others in the series. I'm definitely going back to read the others. Good suspense and mystery; great military details for the novice. "

" I'm starting to go back and pick up the older Reacher novels that I haven't read. This is another strong story from Mr Child. It adds some to the overall Reacher mystique. Its weird now to read a book that talks about faxing and other 20th century technologies. "

" This was an okay book. The book is set in the past when Reacher was in the army. The story help explains who Reacher is in the present, and how he ended where he did when he left the army. "

" The tri-fecta: Inside man, unlikely romance, pointless subplot. Lee Child has a European's view of American institutions: they're all corrupt and evil and oppressive. It gets old. "

" I have gotten slowly moer fond of jack Reacher, the more I read--this one has him still in the military police, so he at least has a job that gives him an excuse for the kinds of trouble that he gets himself into along the way, and his repsonses are slightly more justified. "

" This was a really good mystery with plenty of twists and turns. Reacher was an engaging character. This was the 8th book in the series. But I didn't feel like I had missed 7 books o history on the character. Definitely going to read more in the series. "

" Ripping good read. I gave this novel a 3 because I thought the main character, Reacher, acted out of character in a scene near the end (my opinion only). Otherwise, I would have rated this a 4. It's worth reading for the ride Child's takes you on. "

" I liked this one because it takes place during 1990 in the army. It gives good back story on Jack Reacher, his mother, brother, and career. He mentions in other books about making it to major and being demoted to captain and back up to major. This story goes over the demotion aspect. "
