Come to terms with your past while moving powerfully into the future

The Courage to Heal is an inspiring, comprehensive guide that offers hope and a map of the healing journey to every woman who was sexually abused as a child—and to those who care about her. Although the effects of child sexual abuse are long-term and severe, healing is possible.

Weaving together personal experience with professional knowledge, the authors provide clear explanations, practical suggestions, and support throughout the healing process. Readers will feel recognized and encouraged by hundreds of moving first-person stories drawn from interviews and the authors' extensive work with survivors, both nationally and internationally.

This completely revised and updated 20th anniversary edition continues to provide the compassionate wisdom the book has been famous for, as well as many new features:

  • Contemporary research on trauma and the brain
  • An overview of powerful new healing tools such as imagery, meditation, and body-centered practices
  • Additional stories that reflect an even greater diversity of survivor experiences
  • The reassuring accounts of survivors who have been healing for more than twenty years
  • The most comprehensive, up-to-date resource guide in the field
  • Insights from the authors' decades of experience

"This book was recommended to me by my therapist and I believe it is guide to healing for most silent survivors of sexual abuse. Not only are they sexual abuse victims but they suffer consiquencies of their silence trying to protect the perpetraitor and their families from the scandalby having disorder such as bipolar stroke etc, because even in their silence in their mind they experience trauma. My other friends of age 83 never uttered a word to her fam it continued to be a loving fam but now she suffers stroke.there are many out there who endure this pain.I want to help them by this book."

" A very good book and relevant to the subject. Has insights to the problems that childhood abuse has caused which you may not be aware of. Highly recommend if the subject is of interest. "

" These books are very difficult to work through. Sure it is easy to just mindlessly read through it and I could have finished them much more quickly if I had simply just read them. But Healing takes its own time and moving from one part to the next can be the most difficult. Going through these books along side of counseling has been most beneficial. Working through the books helped me stay focused on what I needed to in between counseling visits and also gave me something to talk about at my next appointment. Thank you Silvia for recommending it and all of your help. "

" Often considered the 'bible for survivors'. It is very good, hard to read. There are parts I don't like, and didn't read. Very helpful in starting to heal and throughout the healing journey. "

" This isn't my favorite book for survivors, but it's definitely the easiest one to find, and it has some really helpful stuff in it. I have found that reading the first chapter and the stories about peoples' abuse is actually pretty bad for me at this point in my healing. The appendix with resources is a place that I found books and organizations that help me more, and the list in the middle of ways to delay answering people or say "no" to requests is solid gold. "

" Can be very healing for clients who are survivors of sexual abuse, however sometimes the graphic nature of the content is traumatizing to clients. So, I am very cautious when recommending this as reading to clients and always teach relaxation skills before recommending it. "
