Publisher Description

Travel back to the earliest days of Pernese history in this first-ever Dragonriders of Pern short story collection. Join the original survey team as they explore Pern and decide to recommend it for colonization. Share the terror of the evacuation from the Southern Continent as a flotilla of ships, aided by intelligent, talking dolphins, braves the currents of the Pernese ocean. Learn how the famous Ruatha Hold was founded, and thrill with the dragonriders as they expand into a second, then a third Weyr. And discover a secret lost in time - the rescue of some of the original colonists before the planet was cut off forever.

Building a new life on a distant world, braving the dreaded Thread that falls like silver rain from the sky only to destroy every living thing it touches, flying heroically on the wondrous dragons - The Dragonriders of Pern!

Anne McCaffrey suggests The Chronicles of Pern should be followed by The Dolphins of Pern.

"I particularly liked the final story, although it was sad that the truth was never known. I liked the way that some gaps were filled in, and things like the naming of Ruatha hold were so clever - that must have been thought up when she wrote the first book."

" This is a collection of short stories about the early days of Pern and its colonization. I only liked one of the stories. The one about how they established more weyrs. The rest were boring, more detailed than they needed to be, and anti-climactic. Do I really care about every single little process that these settlers do, from exactly what they eat at every meal to how they built their homes down to every last detail? No. I want story. Not something that reads like a history textbook. Disappointing, but I still love all things Pern. "

" Really enjoyed reading this book, seems like a bunch of shorter stories going on from the fist people who arrived on Pern and nine year intervals I think. Not as much about the Dragon riders but still good. "

" I'm re-reading the Pern chronicles in chronological order instead of the order they were written. It's been years and , so far, I'm not enjoying them as much as I did the first time. It's possible I'm waiting for the arrival of my favorite characters. "

" A series of novellas describing logistical issues on Pern as the settlers move camp and establish new holds. Full of tongue-twisting names of characters you will never hear from again. You only need to read this out loud to realize how awkwardly-written it is. "

" This would be 4 stars except for all the weird couplings that went on. Every story had a romantic tilt on it, which normally I like from Anne McCaffrey, but when you only have 75 pages from beginning to end, something is really lost in the romance there. "
