Life in the Harper Hall is busy for best friends Kindan, Nonala, and Kelsa. As the only female apprentices, Nonala and Kelsa are the butt of jokes and easy targets for the bully Vaxoram and his cronies. But when Kindan springs to Kelsa’s defense, he winds up in a fight for his life against the older, bigger Vaxoram—a fight that will lead to a surprising friendship.
Meanwhile, in nearby Fort Hold, a clutch of fire-lizard eggs is about to hatch, and Lord Bemin’s beautiful young daughter, Koriana, is determined to Impress one of the delightful creatures. At the hatching, Kindan Impresses a fire-lizard of his own…and wins the heart of Koriana. But Lord Bemin mistrusts harpers and will not hear of a match between his daughter and the low-born Kindan.
Then fate intervenes in the form of a virulent plague as fast-spreading as it is deadly. Arising suddenly, as if out of nowhere, the contagion decimates hold after hold, paying no heed to distinctions of birth. In this feverish crucible, friendship and love will be tested to the breaking point and beyond. For with Threadfall scant years away, the Dragonriders dare not expose themselves to infection, and it will fall to Kindan and his fellow apprentices to bravely search for a cure and save humanity.
The price of failure is unthinkable. But the price of success may be even harder to bear.

"This is one of the best books in the series. We get to see the live of Robinet, Masterharper, and he is fascinating. I really enjoyed the fact that we see is entire life (up until where the next books take place). It is a great background story for one of the more interesting characters of Pern. "
— Angie (4 out of 5 stars)
“Enough detail to make the tragedy all too real and with enough hope to keep fantasy fans happy.”
— Publishers Weekly" Getting better and best read after Dragon's Kin and Dragon's Fire. "
— Anisa, 2/17/2014" Plague....again.... "
— Hengest, 2/12/2014" I enjoy these books that take a piece of time and fill in the blanks. I think that Anne is going a good job training her son to take this amazing world she created and keep it alive. Handing over the reins can be a risky business. "
— Kaylynn, 2/7/2014" I'm reading these because I loved Anne McCaffrey's Pern books. However, Todd McCaffrey's books just aren't quite as good. They seem kind of disjointed...Some of the conversations don't make sense to me...or maybe it's my aged brain not able to keep up. "
— Tina, 2/3/2014" Anne McCaffrey has written an absolutely wonderful fantasy series. Her Pern novels are beautifully written and very enjoyable individually or as a whole. "
— Hazel, 1/25/2014" Good book, reminded me why I like the Pern books. "
— Michael, 1/23/2014" it was not my favorite of this series "
— Alicia, 1/15/2014" Great finish to this trilogy - I love the character growth of Kindan, the miner boy, and the orphan girl. I actually finished this about two weeks ago, and I've already forgotten some names - sorry! Very suspensful, yet heart-warming. "
— Lisa, 1/14/2014" I'm sure that Anne's son is a great guy, but the series has not been the same since both thier names are on it... "
— Richard, 1/12/2014" I went through an Anne McCaffery phase... "
— MMG, 12/16/2013" I liked it, but it was a little too similar to another recent Pern book for me. "
— Sara, 12/13/2013" Another good addition to the Dragonriders of Pern series. It gives a nice set-up to some of the other novels recently released. "
— Marissa, 5/9/2013" So tragically human and yet delightfully superhuman. "
— Susan, 4/5/2013" I suppose I'd be willing to give this two stars for Pern fans, but one for anyone else. Fairly awful writing - pretty much on par with a mediocre children's novel or perhaps an adult novel written by a precocious child. Very disappointing. Its primary virtue is that it's short and a quick read. "
— Craig, 3/20/2013" Read this on my Kindle and thought it was a good one. It was nice to have a less dragon-centric, more society impact focused book. "
— Kristi, 8/31/2012" Had a fantasy binge for quite some time so I'll be handling these reviews with canned factory responses. Decent read. "
— Danny, 3/31/2012" This book is Anne has co-written with her son Todd McCaffrey. It is the story of survival, not against thread, but against a deadly virus which threatens even the dragons and their riders. "
— Monica, 1/18/2012" Plague....again.... "
— Darren, 10/23/2011" Now I have to go back to find one in the Pern series about the settling. I remember reading one about this plague and I want to review some things. Sign of a good book right? Keeps you thinking.... "
— Amy, 9/23/2011" Of all the various Pern novels, the Harper Hall series are my favorites. "
— Gabrielle, 4/28/2011"
If you love dragon books and great characters McCaffrey is your author. These books in my opinion are for adults. The dragons and humans have unmoral habits. "
— Melissa, 1/15/2011" One of the two best books in the series. Moving. "
— Kerry, 1/7/2011" Robinton was always one of my favorite characters so I really enjoyed this one.... "
— Jenny, 1/3/2011" AT LAST A WHOLE BOOK ABOUT MY FAVORITE PERNESE CITIZEN: MASTER ROBINTON....GOOD LEADUP TO THE MAIN EVENTS IN HIS LIFE: LISSA&FLAR, JAXOM&RUTH,THE DRAGON, MENNOLLY,PIEMORE, THE DISCOVERY OF THE FIRST LANDING SITE... "
— Michele, 11/14/2010" Oh, Robinton. How I love you. I couldn't wait to get to this book because he's my favorite character on Pern. It's hard to believe he had such a difficult past, though. So much tragedy, but obviously, it helped him come into his own as one of the most loved figures in the series. "
— Livy, 9/9/2010" Excellent book, very well written. I thought the story line flowed very well. "
— Deanna, 8/13/2010" The Masterharper of Pern was ever the fascinating man, and this book provides insight into who he is and was, clarifying facts and issues. I really enjoyed the insight into Pernese history and the great expanse of the world. "
— Fysierm, 8/4/2010" Pern is one of my favorite fictional worlds. Anne McCaffrey truly makes it come to life. "
— Trish, 8/1/2010" A whole book devoted to one of my favorite characters in the Pern series! Probably not a good entry into the series, as the focus is on the backstory of Robinton, his early life, and how he became Masterharper.

"
— Debbie, 7/29/2010" I loved this whole book except for the ending. The ending felt like it was cobbled onto the end and read like a so-so piece of fan fiction. But the rest of the book was amazing. It chronicles Master Robinton's life from his birth to Dragonflight with all the joys and tradgeys in it. "
