It is a boiling hot Boston summer. Adding to the city’s woes is a series of shocking crimes, in which wealthy men are made to watch while their wives are brutalized. A sadistic demand that ends in abduction and death.
The pattern suggests one man: serial killer Warren Hoyt, recently removed from the city’s streets. Police can only assume an acolyte is at large, a maniac basing his attacks on the twisted medical techniques of the madman he so admires. At least that’s what Detective Jane Rizzoli thinks. Forced again to confront the killer who scarred her—literally and figuratively—she is determined to finally end Hoyt’s awful influence . . . even if it means receiving more resistance from her all-male homicide squad.
But Rizzoli isn’t counting on the U.S. government’s sudden interest. Or on meeting Special Agent Gabriel Dean, who knows more than he will tell. Most of all, she isn’t counting on becoming a target herself, once Hoyt is suddenly free, joining his mysterious blood brother in a vicious vendetta. . . .
Filled with superbly created characters—and the medical and police procedural details that are her trademark—The Apprentice is Tess Gerritsen at her brilliant best. Set in a stunning world where evil is easy to learn and hard to end, this is a thriller by a master who could teach other authors a thing or two.

"Listened to this on audio. This is the 2nd book in the Jane Rizzoli series set in Boston. Jane is a homicide detective who is investigating the murder of two couples that resembles a case she was involved in the previous year. The only problem is the killer in that case is currently in prison. I'm a little leery of serial killer mysteries as they seem to be very popular, but I enjoyed this book. Jane can handle herself, and prooves that point at the end of the book."

" Tess Gerritsen can breathe life into a story and again, another Rizzoli and Isles that I couldn't put down. "
— Annie, 2/20/2014" Gory and suspenseful. Good. Addresses the challenge of being a female homicide detective in a man's world and the non-gender challenge of handling the evil seen on the job on a daily basis. "
— Sandy, 2/5/2014" Not as good as the first book but still a real page turner, and finished it pretty quickly! Good twists.. "
— Kate, 1/23/2014" Brilliant. The Rizzoli and Isles books never fail to keep you turning the pages. Good to be back with the characters who we are beginning to know and love (or not). This one will keep you guessing whilst you read in horror and fascination - and relief! "
— Lisa, 1/17/2014" Excellent followup to "The Surgeon" however I felt the climax was rushed. I am going to continue reading this series even if it gives me a few sleepless nights! "
— Sue, 12/28/2013" Just godd and interesting. OK "
— Padmini, 12/12/2013" Gruesome, evil, disgusting murders, yet the suspense is great. I liked Rizzoli a little more in this book. Looking forward to continuing the series. "
— Wendy, 12/9/2013" This was a guilty pleasure for me. I love the show, so while reading it, I feel like I'm watching it. It's a quick read, and you get exactly what you expect from it! "
— Regan, 12/4/2013" I listened to this on audiobook and the narrator was intolerable, which stinks because the story itself is quite good. "
— Arianna, 11/26/2013" Creepy good! I am really enjoying the Rizzoli and Isles series so far, and it's so nice to read a book with strong female characters. I believe women in particular will appreciate these murder mysteries. "
— Lisa, 11/22/2013" Anything by Tess is worth the read. "
